Mysterious t-shirt smell

Hi,

So I have one t-shirt that I wear for work often. The last couple of times I've worn it I've noticed I smell. Really odd as I never smell, shower every day etc, use deodorant. I only connected it to the t-shirt on the second time it happened and noted I was in the same top.

It's just gone through the wash and I smelt it fresh from the dryer and the armpits still have a real sweaty smell. No other clothing smells at all.

What on earth? Do I throw it away? Can I fix it?

Laundry is washed at 30 or 40 degrees depending if the kids clothes are in there and mucky. Normal cycles etc. I use non-bio for the baby but always have and no issues.

I’ve heard of vinegar for sweat so I googled.

White vinegar is a powerful odor neutralizer and works wonders on underarm areas of fabrics. Fill your washing machine with water, then add 1/3 cup of white vinegar. Turn off the machine and let the garment soak for 20 minutes, then launder as usual

Do one hotter wash and iron the armpits on the inside

I use a vinegar spray on armpits before washing if they're whiffy.

You can buy a bottle for less than £1 in Home Bargains, B&M , Wilko etc

How would you wash sweaty gym gear? Napsan is decent apparently.

I wash sweaty gym gear the same as everything else and nothing ever smells.

I'll try a hot wash - although it's black so may not be ideal. I'll try ironing but if not vinegar.

Can't for the life of me understand why this t-shift would be different to any other item of clothing.

I've seen people recommend a capful of Zoflora in the fabric softener bit of the washing machine drawer to help with stinky gym kit

gamerchick · 18/12/2021 21:19

It's the fabric. Since I hit the menopause early years, it's a pain to wash some tops. I use dettol laundry stuff in with a wash or a handful of Epson salts in the machine. There is other stuff to try.

Sometimes I lose patience and just get rid though.

What is the T shirt made of ? Some synthetics really hold onto scent, I have noticed this with a thermal top I have. I am a chilly person and nothing else I own ever smells sweaty, but this top just seems to hold onto odour.
I agree with white vinegar.

I use fabulosa laundry sanitiser for smelly gym kit. They have some nice fragrances
