Sofa smells of smoke...

Have bought a lovely secondhand sofa, however, it smells of stale smoke. Any ideas as to how I might get rid of the smell? (Covers aren’t removable/washable.) TIA!

Bicarbonate of soda? It absorbs odours.
Buy plenty, sprinkle it all over then leave as long as possible before hoovering it out.

Wrong time of year for this but airing it for days will help. A trick for getting smoke smell from cars it to leave them a day of two with bowls of vinegar inside. I don't know how you could work this for a sofa except perhaps by putting it in a pop up tent! The worst thing you can do is get them wet as it drives the smell in deeper and may actually rot the filling leaving an even worse smell. You get this a lot in cars where people have tried to steam clean. You could try covering it with old duvets or heavy cotton covers, which have been washed in Zoflora or very strong fabric conditioner and then sit on it to heat it up. That might draw some of the odour up into the duvet /covers which you could then wash. You can get specialist smoke sponges and smoke putty that you rub over the item. I'd want to spot test them first.

I've not tested this, so can't vouch for efficacy, but I saw a video where someone lightly sprayed cushions all over with white vinegar, put cushions into a bin bag and then sucked sit out with a vacuum and left overnight. Other than that, bicarbonate works if left long enough
