Non waterproof protector for firm mattresses ?

New mattress is getting delivered tomorrow! Now that kids grew out of bed wetting stage (and crawling into our bed stage), I’m looking for a nice comfy mattress protector that doesn’t have to be water proof.
Any recommendations?

I still use waterproof ones for my 2 teenagers in case of sickness/nosebleeds or period leaks

The waterproof ones we used always had a strange plasticky sound with them!

Does anyone know what kinds hotels use?
It’s for our bed, not kids beds
