Why am I getting black bits in mugs/glasses from dishwasher?

I've only had it just over a month (1st one I've had) and put mugs and glasses on top shelf upside down, but they almost always have these little black bits in them and it's so annoying because then I have to hand wash them, which defeats the purpose of the dishwasher. I'm using aldis dishwasher tabs, not sure if that might be the problem? Should I fork out for Finish? Thanks

You might need an extra rinse from where the salt has got stuck and not rinsed off properly. We've used all different types and I don't think there's much difference in them.

Is your filter clean? Try a hotter wash.

Seeline · 14/12/2021 09:46

Is that inside or outside the cup? Not clear from the picture!

If it's the outside, are you rinsing the really dirty stuff before putting it in the dishwasher? The filter probably needs a clean if not.

cloudtree · 14/12/2021 09:50

Have you cleaned your filter yet and washed the dishwasher.

Ours get done every four weeks (or sooner if they need it). All racks etc out, filter emptied and cleaned, then a cleaning cycle run with dishwasher cleaner.

Those are probably well boiled and then dried desiccated bits of food. You really should scrape and rinse all food bits off before putting dishes in dishwasher. Otherwise they just bounce around inside it and stick to dishes. You can get away with not cleaning the food filter for a few washes, but if you insist on not scraping and rinsing food off the dishes beforehand, you should be cleaning the dishwasher food filter after every wash.

I was always under the impression that - apart from scraping off food - you shouldn't rinse dishes before they go in the dishwasher, as it makes the wash less effective -

No idea what the black bits are op. Are your salt and rinse aid topped up? Have you cleaned the filters?

WonderWomansBoobs · 14/12/2021 11:11

@Seeline inside of cups.

@Medievalist my manual said not to rinse before washing so I haven't been (unless it a mash potato pan or similar then I'll give it a run around with a sponge.

Use the eco clean(40°) usually, but same happens if I do a fast wash (60°) Salt and rinse aid topped up, though I've not done a cleaning cycle, maybe I need to do that. I think I cleaned the filter about 2 weeks ago, but tbh the black bits were there within a week of getting it. Will give it all a good clean and try again.

@cloudtree do you put the racks back in for a cleaning cycle?

Thought a dish washer would make life easier lol.

I put all the bits back in with a bottle of the cleaning stuff. That way eveything is cleaned. Our arms need doing manually first though, the little holes get clogged otherwise. Likewise the circular plate thing the arm sits on also needs taking out and wiping down. It’s amazing how quickly gunk builds up on the back of it otherwise.

WonderWomansBoobs · 14/12/2021 13:48

I'm guessing this (pic) is the filter? It didn't really have anything in it. Blades are clean too. Just topped the salt up (how often do you do this? Usually put it on once a day) so not sure why there's black bits. Will get a cleaning solution and try that

I don't rinse anything either, though obviously scrape off any food particles.

Are you using a short wash cycle? If so, it would be worth trying a longer one.

cloudtree · 14/12/2021 19:28

I think you need to check your manual. In mine the plate thing lifts up

TerrifiedandWorried · 14/12/2021 19:30

Can the arm actually spin? DH is always putting things that are too tall in the bottom then it stops the arm spinning and that happens.

WonderWomansBoobs · 16/12/2021 11:50

I've put it on an intensive wash this morning and everything was sparkling. I was just trying to be eco friendly using the longer wash.
Thanks for everyone's help x
