My Christmas tidying challenge!

XmasAdulting · 07/11/2021 12:37

I am very untidy and disorganised - always have been (much to my very, very tidy parents' dismay). I also managed to marry another untidy bod and we have four very untidy children (2 with ASD). Our house is very messy and so is difficult to clean properly. I am now on a mission to tidy and declutter so we can have family around in December especially as we have relatives coming from overseas. They aren't staying here but it would be nice to have them over to visit our home too.

We both work full-time and I have a second job too so fitting it all in seems challenging but needs to be done.

So this is my accountability thread! I have been here a long time but nc'd as I might put up some pictures to keep me going Smile

Any advice and good tips are welcome!!

Following as I would like to get house organised for Xmas

Each person gets a donate and throw away bag, that have to declutter their own things and fill the bag. For shared rooms such as kitchen, lounge, bathroom etc be ruthless and do a cupboard at a time. The main thing is to fully deal with each cupboard as you go so not to create piles as such but to actually bin and bag up the donate items etc. Good luck! X

I highly recommend this book

I'm on an eternal mission to sort everything.
We need to have hall, landing and a few bedrooms redecorated next summer so I want to sort as much as possible by then, with the mindset as if we were moving.
I just want to get rid of a lot of stuff.

I'm sorting clothes and I have 3 weeks for this job until DS3's birthday party.
Deadlines are good, they are the only things that make me do anything 🤣

best of luck

Come and join us on the November declutter thread. My goal is to get rid of 500 items by Christmas.

I'm decluttering, sorting and deep cleaning everything in preparation. But have a much closer time scale 26th November as having a state visit (MIL visiting). I've just finished decluttering and now onto the deep cleaning todays task is washing all the curtains in the house and doing some more grout cleaning in the kitchen.

Dana K White, aka a slob comes clean, has a 14 day “get your house ready for guests” series on YouTube at the moment if that would be helpful.

I really need to do this. The challenge for me is having a health condition which leaves me with very little energy. Things get piled up and I just don't have the energy to deal with it.

Rainallnight · 07/11/2021 13:45

I need this

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 07/11/2021 13:56

I am the same as you - the messy offspring of two neat freaks married to another mess monster. I made a start on Friday and decluttered the living room. The hall way is my biggest challenge and I am trying to find the strength to face that!

Thank you all for your wonderful messages and I will respond to each of you but I've got a couple of mins whilst I wrestle with bedtime and wanted to update as I'm feeling quite proud of today's efforts. As well as the tidying I also did two lots of washing and drying so everyone has clean school uniform and ran the dishwasher (as well as doing cooked breakfast for everyone). So before and after pics of part of the living room are below:

Great progress, well done!

Newnews · 08/11/2021 09:59

That is brilliant progress! And I LOVE your sideboard/desk thingy in pic 1. Is it Gplan?

You look like you suffer from the same as me which is putting things into bags with the hope/plan that it will help you organise stuff to get rid of later etc. So I have imposed on myself a bag ban! No more putting stuff into bags as a way of sorting/tidying. I let myself have one charity shop bag on the go at any given point but otherwise I try to force myself to deal with it then and there.
