Moving house/removals

Hello! Hoping this is ok to post here, was unsure of what topic to put this under.
But basically totally overwhelmed with the task of moving house, and starting to consider just paying a removal company to do it all for us.

Just wondered if others can share their experiences? If they did it themselves or removal? I have no idea of even a ball park figgure for removal companies.
It would be moving a 5 bedroom house approximately 110miles away.

Help! 🤷‍♀️🙈

We moved in September from 3 bed end terrace and moved about 30 miles. We booked removal van and they packed for us too. It was absolutely 100% the best thing I've ever spent money on. Ever. It was about £1200 altogether I think but beyond worth it, it took a lot of stress from a hugely stressful situation!

We booked the removers to pack and move us for our last move - totally worth it, would definitely do it again

I'm not sure how you'd even go about moving the contents of a 5 bed house yourself, unless you have a licence to drive a large lorry?
Assuming you are selling the property, everything will need to be out on the morning of completion - so unless you have a rental to move stuff to beforehand or are willing to use temporary storage, you won't be able to make multiple trips. Getting everything out of the house and into a lorry quickly will be a mean feat unless you have a good number of able-bodied helpers.
Just get some quotes? We paid for movers last time (1 bed flat + contents of loft & shed, less than a mile) as I didn't think the biggest van DH could drive would fit everything and frankly it was so worth the money as we were 1st floor so getting stuff out was a pain in the arse. It meant I could concentrate on sorting out the cats, & having a quick hoover and clean before handing over the keys at 1pm.

We had quotes from £2500-3500 for moving a 2 bed house about 350 miles (so it was a 2 day move). From all the quotes, the packing only made up about £500 of it so it was well worth it. We didn't have loads for them to pack as we'd already done some ourselves but we just didn't have time to finish so it was great not to worry about the rest.

Also, if you pay for packing, just put more of your time and energy into clearing stuff out in the meantime (and then again when you unpack at the other end).

gogohm · 06/11/2021 14:10

My advice is to reduce and declutter radically before you move, remember less to unpack!

Thank you all for your replies. It's made me want to pay for the lot to be done.

Do they take about your furniture and re assemble at the other end as well?

What about things like garden pot plants etc, do they take all of that?

We have 4 kids, 2 with SEN plus 2 dogs. So it would definitely take the pressure off big time

Oh and we definitely want to declutter. Which makes me wonder how you get an accurate quote, as we are probably only keeping about 50% of our furniture/appliances, but we are yet to know exactly as we are waiting on the fixtures and fitting details from the new house and exact measurements etc. And still working out what our budget will be for buying new stuff.

If the movers pack for you, what about at the other end? Do they just put the boxes in the right rooms roughly then go?

We've just had a quote for £6500 from South East England to Borders Scotland. Crazy, we are in a small 4 bed with not a great deal of stuff! If anyone has any recommendations for a Berkshire-ish company I'd be very grateful!

Claudia84 · 06/11/2021 14:59

We payed for the pack and move. Honestly money well spent and I would do it again even if it was double the money. They do assemble your furniture the other side as well. It's brilliant.

MummySharkDoodoododoo · 06/11/2021 20:27

I think you have convinced me. Just need to get some quotes now!
