How can I get mud out of a cream carpet?

DH trod mud all over the living room carpet at the weekend . I waited for it to dry and then hoovered it. It has all come up aprat from two patches. Has anyone any tips- I don't want to damage the pile or make it worse.

Before you go down the path of industrial strength cleaner, have you tried a Johnson's baby wipe? God knows what they do to babies' delicate bums but the family joke that if anything needs cleaning a baby wipe will fix it!

Thanks Heated - I haven't tried a baby wipe yet but will give it a go. I don't know what I did before I had baby wipes - I also use them for pretty much everything. They are fab for cleaning stainless steel cooker hoods!
