How to clean textured rugs?

Follows on from another post, but how do you clean your rugs? Specifically thinking about an awkward textured jute-ish runner in our hallway. Hallway is too narrow for it to be reasonable for shoes to be removed before the runner, and pram also needs to be stored after the runner so pram wheels sometimes need to sit on it. I've been using charm antibac aerosol spray every couple of weeks (dettol equivalent) but having been told off by another mum that this isn't "baby safe" I'm looking for suggestions of what else I could use?

Is it small/pliable enough to go in the washing machine?
If not could you swap it for something washable?
I have a small Ikea one in my hall that I put in the washing machine on a low spin, 30 degrees.

Nope its quite big and I think I love it too much to easily let it go! May have to just make my cleaning of it more occasional...

I use a portable handheld steam cleaner to clean my non machine washable rugs. Steam mops can also be used on rugs.
