Smell in kitchen, driving me MAD

As the title says, there is a smell in the kitchen that I can't identify that I'm on the brink of tears of frustration about because of the house layout, the smell hits you as soon as you walk in the front door.

Smell is sort of like just gone off meat.

So far I have: cleaned the kitchen, inside all the cupboards, checked dates on things, cleaned the kitchen bin, thoroughly cleaned the fridge and thrown almost everything out, checked the freezer, moved the fridge out to check behind it, removed the kick boards and looked under there, ran the dishwasher on 3 clean cycles, ran the washing machine on 3 boil washes with washing machine cleaner, scrubbed the floor by hand and now I'm out of options.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

Next step would be under the floor as there is a large space under there however it appears you can't get down there without ripping the flooring up Angry

Thanks for the reply, no plants! Not a plant household really!

Check the drains? Underneath the presses ? Failing that I'd check the attic for a dead rodent or there could be one in the walls

Callybrid · 13/09/2021 18:43

Do you have an insinkerator? Ours was smelling as something had got trapped in the rubber cover bit and I hadn’t realised you could remove to clean.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 13/09/2021 18:44

Dead mouse somewhere?

Sorry I forgot I have cleaned the drain with drain cleaner as well!

I’d bet it’s the drains somewhere. Or pipes into washing machine, they can stink.

HastaLaVistaBebe · 13/09/2021 18:47

We had a smell in the kitchen once which bizarrely was resolved by installing a vent at the top of the waste pipe on the roof, which a previous builder had neglected to include. Turns out drain smells had nowhere to escape to and were floating around within cavity walls.l and finding their way into the kitchen.

However, our smelled were more drain like, rotten meat suggests a dead mouse somewhere maybe? Hope you find the cause.

lemonyfox · 13/09/2021 18:48

Do you have a bag of potatoes somewhere that might have gone off? I had this same thing a few weeks ago, potatoes had turned almost into liquid they were so rotten and we'd only bought them a week before!

ChickyNuggies · 13/09/2021 18:48

Dead something is on my list of possibilities but I don't know where, have checked on top of all the cupboards and cleaned those as well, pulled out the washing machine to look behind there too!

Has anyone spilt any tea or coffee with milk in?

That can absolutely stink

ChickyNuggies · 13/09/2021 18:50

I did think bag of potatoes as well but looked everywhere and can't find any. My last hope was rotten potato behind the fridge but nothing there either!

Have you tried cleaning the drain hole inside your fridge?

Ours was draining onto the evap tray and the smell was coming from the units to the side of the fridge.

Cotton buds, and squirted a mix of baking soda and water down the drain hole.

RainyDay2020 · 13/09/2021 18:50

Have you completely taken the fridge apart as in all shelves etc .
There was a weird smell in the fridge and it turned out to be a tiny bit of spilled milk on the underside of a shelf which had gone sour. Took me ages to find it.

Eyeskydry · 13/09/2021 18:50

Check the back of the fridge. Dead rodents in there can get very smelly. Tricky to get out too!

Anyonebut · 13/09/2021 18:51

Another vote for rotten potato hiding between healthy potatoes.

Have you cleaned the fridge drain? Here's a link to a zombie thread that explains better than I can: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/housekeeping/1642271-how-do-you-clean-the-draining-hole-Im-your-fridge

Ah hah, this sounds like a maybe, I have cleaned the fridge and all the shelves etc and there was quite a lot of water at the bottom of the fridge which might have had something to do with the fridge drain. Although I must say the fridge doesn't smell when you stick your head in it

Check your sink overflow by overfilling sink and see if it flows down it. Mine were stinking in kitchen and bathroom as blocked.

HeronLanyon · 13/09/2021 18:54

If it is a dead something th smell should go within around two weeks. I know from experience where I was going to have to basically rip the walls and floors up to find it. Had done exactly everything you have done. Instead I stayed with a friend for a week. Hasn’t happened again for over 10 years.

Thirtyrock39 · 13/09/2021 18:55

I bet it'll be the fridge drain hole if there's lots of water in your fridge
It's very satisfying cleaning it as well !

romdowa · 13/09/2021 18:56

Yes the drip tray at the back of the fridge can get absolutely vile. My mother's one was all mold and everything when we found it and got it out

TertiusLydgate · 13/09/2021 18:56

We had an unexplained pong in our kitchen recently which is driving me mad.

Detective work lead to the overflow of the butler sink because a feckless child had put food down it.

ChickyNuggies · 13/09/2021 18:58

This is very interesting. 39 years on this planet and didn't know this was a thing. How do I get it out?!
