New house - smokers smell

We've just moved into our new flat and I think the previous owners must have smoked (probably occasionally). Didn't notice it when we looked around, but now I keep getting whiffs, particularly when we've been out for a while. What's the best way to get rid of the smell? I'm trying to keep windows open as much as possible, and I've washed down most of the walls, but at a bit of a loss now

Have you got carpets? My DM & DF ended up replacing the carpets in their flat due to the smell of strake cigarette smoke.

You might want to try cleaning them first though Smile

@DominicRaabsTravelAgent no it's all hard floors, otherwise they'd be right out. We've got rid of nearly all the curtains too.

Bicarbonate of soda in bowls.
Ditto vinegar.
Maybe half an onion, but only because I used that for paint smells.

Nilodor - which stinks to high heaven but works.

Washed the walls?

MarvEll · 12/09/2021 21:36

@Kitchendrama1 yes sort of washed the walls, but actually maybe I could give them another go.
Oh yes I've heard of using vinegar - good shout. Might try onion as I have some that need using 🤣

If you need to paint I would use a paint with high Voc. I used to have a room that smelt like cat piss. I used a high Voc paint and the smell didn’t come back. Can’t remember the name but you wouldn’t be able to sleep in the room/use it after for a few days.

Do the ceilings as well. Wash with vinegar and bicarbonate as well.

My SIL's old flat had cigarette smoke coming through from a neighbour via a vent in a cupboard. Perhaps check that if it's just random whiffs.

One room in our house stank of cigarettes.
Cleared out everything and even replastered but ended up having to replace the radiator because every time the heating was on the smell came back as the rads were old and painted and nicotine had soaked in.

I would never have thought of changing the radiator!

If you have a hot water tank you may find the smell has soaked into the jacket. We only discovered that's what it was as we were having the tank removed.

Thanks for all these suggestions! These darn smokers 🙄 I'm hoping it won't be too long until we can get it all painted, but I'm keeping an eye on the radiators and ceiling too!
