Most humane way to kill flies?

SamMil · 12/09/2021 18:21

Can anyone recommend the most effective and quickest way to kill house flies? I've been putting up with them for a couple of weeks as I thought they'd die off on their own gradually but they haven't!

I think we need to kill them unfortunately, but I'd prefer something that kills them quickly - I hate the fly paper where they just stick & take ages to die Sad

Any suggestions?

I've got an electric zapper shaped like a tennis racquet. Its really powerful, one zap and they're dead instantly.

Pet spider?

Depending on your budget, either a day trip to Dignitas or a quick thwack with a rolled up newspaper.

I find using a rubber glove as a fly swat very effective. It knocks them to the ground, then it's up to you to kill it or put it outside.🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 (Couldn't find a fly emoji but the method works for bees too.)

Electric fly swatter. Quickly dispatches them. Got rid of all my fruit flies.

Yes electric (battery operated, not mains) seaters are brilliant.

Thanks everyone, will take a look at the electric swatters!

Shock Don't kill bees!

QuornStarMartini · 12/09/2021 19:25

You don’t have to kill them, jyst google and there’s lots of ways to remove flies without killing them.

But you need to work out why they’re in your house as you’ll keep getting them. Food left around, bins not emptied, lots of house plants etc.

Agree with previous poster. WTF would you kill bees!?

@PainterInPeril - why on earth do you kill bees? Wasps ok. But not bees.
PainterInPeril · 12/09/2021 20:35

Sorry, guys! I meant wasps, not bees! I don't kill bees. I agree with you... Don't kill bees!!

QuornStarMartini · 12/09/2021 20:37

Don’t kill wasps or flies either.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 12/09/2021 20:45

Get a cat. They eat them.

Astraturf · 12/09/2021 20:48

To stop more coming in you can get screens that are the rough side of velcro that you stick around the window and mosquito nets that you attach to it.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 12/09/2021 20:51

Def get a dcat.

Agree with electric fly swat, plus it’s fun, exercise for you and satisfying (sometimes they fizz/pop/explode, mwahahaha….don’t judge me!)

I have put some carnivorous plants in the most fly-prone windows though, and think that’s reduced them.

You should get out more if that’s what you class as fun. Or a clean your house so it’s not full of flies. 😉

I'm soft as hell, I don't kill them as much as they piss me off. Not much help sorry :)

They don't die off gradually - they are very efficient breeders. Fly spray works for me - they are disgustingly dirty and carry germs . Why wouldn't you just kill them .

My house is clean. And healthily well-ventilated in the summer, which is why the flies come in.

longtompot · 13/09/2021 11:01

Apparently if you plant thyme in baskets and hang them near doorways and windows that can stop them coming in the house. Annoyingly our back door opens the wrong way for me to hang one up near there.
