Slugs in the house

I come down in the morning to glistening trails on the floor. It's an old house so plenty of places a determined slug could squeeze in. Strangely, I've never actually seen a slug, only the trails. Any suggestions for keeping them away?

We have a crawling 9 month old so any solutions need to be safe for her. I know slug pellets aren't viewed as a good option nowadays anyway, but we certainly won't be putting them down, for example.

I'm afraid at least one slug won't be living to a right age. Came down to desiccated slug in the kitchen this morning (then had to distract DD with a toy she's not seen for a while so she didn't try to have it for breakfast while I was scooping it off the floor).

It remains to be seen whether he was a lone intruder, or whether his slimy mates are even now waiting to take vengeance.
