Beko washing machine filter leak

My Beko washing machine was on the blink yesterday and in an attempt to fix it, I removed the filter to give it a clean. Have to admit this is the first time I've done this in the 3 years of owning the machine as I'd always struggled to get the panel off the front to access it. Anyway, I removed it, cleaned out the gunk and a few coins. Put it all back but then when we finally managed to get the machine working, it started leaking from the filter.

I can't work out what's happened - the filter goes all the way in, I can't screw it in any further and it feels snug all the way around I.e no obvious gaps.

Anyone had this before? Have I missed something obvious or is the filter broken?
