Anyone with an Ottoman bed please?

Hi there

I am looking to get a new bed. My fave so far is a velvet ottoman bed from Next (link below). However I have never had an Ottoman before, to me they look like they would be very heavy, with potential to break and a risk the mattress could fall when lifting. Also I guess you'd need to strip the bed to open it, or it was all go everywhere. Would this mean you would use it less than having drawers or just a bed frame with stuff under it. I'm sorry if these are totally daft questions, I hope someone can explain I'm totally off and they are good!

We currently have a few under bed boxes that store our sheets, and a few other items we would want daily access to. Would this mean an Ottoman is not for us?

I'd love a right side opening one on legs, but impossible to find so far. I want to keep a folded clothes horse underneath...! But I've heard they're great-must don't go for cheapest of the cheap as you need good quality gas lift arms, not ones that break after a year.

Just not must.

@Chunkymenrock Sueno do one that is half ottoman and half drawers. The ottoman bit is end opening. Would that work?

@Chunkymenrock we’ve got this one from dunelm. Only had it since February so can’t comment on longevity though…

I love that one and it would be perfect but the opening is one the wrong side! Does it feel good quality?

Sadly end opening wouldn't work but thank you very much for the thought!

We have one and I love it!! It's nice and high too which seemed to be quite hard to find - they were all very low to the floor. Our is side opening and nothing falls off except occasionally a pillow. We keep all our bedding and towels underneath and there is still plenty of room left! Would highly recommend.

I’ve recently just bought this in super king size

www.dreams.co.uk/deacon-upholstered-ottoman-bed-frame/p/251-00277

It’s bottom opening and doesn’t have a footboard which I know you want but I’m a total convert. So much space underneath and so comfy.

Mines from Argos and I am In And out of it daily! It's got so much storage and easy to lift :)

@ExtremelyDisorganised

I would say the only issue we have had is the cat jumping in when you have your back turned and then being woken up in the night by a strange scratching sound from the bed.
Ha ha, I have to make sure the bedroom door is shut before I risk opening ours for that very reason!
ShowOfHands · 25/08/2021 22:11

I bought one earlier this year. Even started a thread on here as I was struggling to find one that wasn't grey bloody velvet. I adore mine. It's cavernous, easy to use and a v good purchase all round.

CurlsLDN · 25/08/2021 22:15

I used to work for a company who made beds, Including ottomans.
Not all ottoman beds have gas struts, and of course gas struts come in all different qualities, so best to try before you buy as others have said.
The struts should make it very easy to lift, if they are present and decent quality

Staywithmemyblood · 25/08/2021 22:30

Our teenage DD has an ottoman bed. Storage capacity is great. Our cat also makes a beeline for it as soon as it is opened - all that lovely squishy bedding to nap on! 😻

HelpOrganising · 26/08/2021 06:41

@Chunkymenrock you can build it to open either way, there’s instructions for left and right opening.
It’s good. we had a solid wood bed before that was massive and chunky, This isn’t as solid feeling, but it’s certainly not wobbly or poor quality.
The storage space is great, and it’s great with the legs being able to hoover under it (what excitement my life has Grin)

Sugarandtime · 26/08/2021 20:36

How deep is the storage area?
Need one that can fit some boxes under

ExtremelyDisorganised · 26/08/2021 22:32

They vary. Mine is the same height as a box file, I keep some of our paperwork in ours and they fit perfectly. It has a deep mattress too so it's quite high, I had to buy new, taller bedside lights because our old ones were too low to read by.
