Can anyone help me get rid of the smell in a butter dish? It was a charity shop find and I assumed it would just need a wash but it still smells like rancid butter Envy (not envy)

Try filling it with baking soda and leaving it over n night, then rinse and wash on a very hot soapy wash.

You might need to do it a few times but it should help

Good plan thank you will try some bicarb. I feel like the smell is fading after 3 hot washes but I may just be getting nose blind and happy to try anything at this point as I've wanted one for ages!

Would a run through the dishwasher help?

@dumpling123

Would a run through the dishwasher help?
Sadly not. Have tried dishwasher and hand washing.

It depends - if it is ceramic, it may be quite difficult to remove. I'd keep going with a paste of bicarb (small amount of water and loads of bicarb) and leave for a while before hot wash, then repeat

It is ceramic. Stupidly I thought that wouldn't hang onto the smell! I'll keep at it thank you. It's currently smothered in bircab!

Leave it outside in the garden for a week. With the lid off, obviously.

When the neighbour’s cat has shit in it you’ ll forget all about the rancid smell. No problem.
EatSprayGlove · 17/08/2021 21:55

Don't worry @Riapia it'll be my own cat that does that Envy (not envy)

Aware this thread is from last year and whilst I’m not the OP — I could have written it, word for word!

Found a lovely Mason Cash ceramic butter dish in the charity shop.

Bit stinky, I think.

Nothing a good hot cycle in the dishwasher won’t fix, I think.

…NOPE. Not only did this somehow seem to intensify the faint whiff of rancid butter, it also managed to transfer said stench to the dishwasher itself and the crockery in it Confused

Like PP I had no inkling that seemingly unblemished ceramics could retain the whiff of rancid dairy in such a frankly impressive manner! The cure was baking soda — handfuls and handfuls of it — smeared on as a paste over several days, and finally rinsed off in an effervescent fizz of satisfying glory with white vinegar.

I’m posting this in case anyone else decides to rehome a slightly whiffy crockery butter dish which, unbeknownst to them, has had butter go rancid in it during its time on its previous owner’s watch. Wink

I'm sorry you also had to go through this @ChocAuVin
