Why is my washing machine doing this?

My washing machine is making grey stains appear on my tops. It only seems to happen on cotton clothes and the marks are around the neck, shoulders and sleeves. They don't wash out. It doesn't happen on the rest of the family's clothes! I use a liquid detergent. Any ideas?

Do you drink a lot of red wine?
Do you tend to dribble without noticing it?

Weird. I thought it would be marks from gunge trapped in the door seal, but it doesn’t look like that (although it is worth pushing a cloth right into the seal and working it round just in case) .
Do a hot (empty machine) cleaning wash with machine cleaner as a starting point. Check the filter and wash the soap drawer, then try washing with a different detergent for a few washes in case it is a deterrent issue rather than a machine problem. Could you be getting anything on those clothes, like sunblock ?

if that is oil from the bearings, sorry its terminal. We had that last year

If its not happening on other family members clothes that would suggest its something you're using.
Check your clothes before you put them in the machine.
Could it be a perfume, sun cream spray etc?

Thank you for the suggestions!

No, not dribbled red wine - made me smile though.

It's been happening for at least a year - have cleaned machine regularly and tried different detergents.

Perfume is the only thing I haven't thought of - frustrating if it is that. I sometimes spray a cloud and walk into it, so it could fit.

It's been putting me off getting new tops because some of them have been stained after the first wash. Maybe trialling a new top and changing how I use perfume is the way to go.

I'd also switch from liquid detergent to powder. It's better at stain removal

That happened with mine. RIP machine Sad I also thought it was the bearings.
