Hi everyone have been a lurker for a long time but looking for some help , I have depression along with other mental health issues my house is upside down atm I've been working full time for the last 6 months but have packed it in as I just can't do it anymore! Has anyone ideally with depression got any tips to help me clear this house I have children and I want them to have a nice clean tidy house regardless of how I feel! I am embarrassed to let people in and dread the door going - so wise mumsnetters any tips?

No tips but your post really resonated with me. I really struggle with depression and anxiety and am stuck in a vicious cycle. The mess makes me stressed and anxious but the stress and anxiety then prevents me from tackling anything.

Recently I have decided to pick a few things each day that I will do. I write them in a list, set aside a little time and then just do it. I really have to force myself sometimes but I feel like it is helping.

I've been there and it's so hard to get motivated. I would recommend always keeping the kitchen tidy, doing the dishes, wiping the surfaces etc. as the only 'must do' then write a list of very small tasks that would take no longer than 5 minutes e.g. dust the living room, or clean the bathroom sink etc. Set a timer and when the 5 mins is up if you feel like carrying on then do so but if not stop. Later on after doing something you like to do choose another little task off the list and do another 5 minutes. Even if you just do one task a day that will make you feel so much better and gradually things will start to seem much less intimidating. Could your children help? How old are they?

I'm going through the menopause and suffer from fatigue and anxiety. I hate cleaning and it can seem overwhelming when I am tired so can understand how you feel.

I would reiterate the good advice already given:

I always keep the kitchen clean and do the dishes as soon as possible.

I try to do a bit of housework over a few days. Today I have hoovered and will wash the floor.

Tomorrow I will clean the bathroom and tidy up the living room.

On Monday I will iron.

I put music on to try and motivate myself and if I feel too tired to tackle any housework I try to go to bed early and do it the next day.

Try TOMM (The Organised Mum Method) www.theorganisedmum.blog. It's great, made me feel loads better.

If it takes less than two minutes do it there and then.
Every day try to tackle one room for just ten minutes. Plan treats as rewards and give yourself a massive pat on the back when you've done it 🌷
