How to clean soot off pale wallpaper?

Just that really! We have a small patch to the side of the fireplace, probably where the tongs etc were kept. Gas fire, if that helps. Decorator advises using a fairy liquid solution - I’m doubtful and think it’ll smear and leave a patch. I’m wondering if a pencil rubber might be better… he thinks it’ll take the colour off. Please help :)

You clean wallpaper marks with a slice of bread.

Use the inside of a crust from a fresh white loaf - one you have to slice.

With soot, dab gently rather than rub and maybe gently lift the dust first with sellotape wrapped around your fingers sticky side out like you would with lily pollen off a white tablecloth.
