How often do you repaint your kitchen/hall?

Just wondering what’s normal for the high use areas of the home which get knocked and marked.

Kitchen is looking slightly battered and in need of a lick of paint after 18 months, but it’s just normal matt paint not Kitchen & Bathroom so that doesn’t help.

Prefer going on holiday... so never... yes there are marks (moved in in 93) but who cares.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 04/07/2021 20:13

It would be a fairly shit holiday for the price of two tins of paint, but I guess if you added up all the tins over 28 years you could afford a mini break.

Been here 20 years.
ExH painted hall, stairs & landing not long after we moved in. I retouched it (did all the bits I could reach from standing and just sort of tapered off up the stairwell) with left over paint about 10 years ago. It could do with doing again but would need new paint and I'm not doing the whole thing up the stairwell so I'd need to get someone in.

Kitchen we might have done, probably did as moved units around about 18 years ago when we had a conservatory put on. Had a new kitchen about 20m ago and repainted it, and the utility, then.
There are a few bits that could do with a touch up.

Not just 2 tins of paint for me... would need brushes/roller, ladders, platform (hall and part of kitchen is double height), masking tape, coverings for carpet etc... or, more likely to pay for someone else to do it.Blush

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 04/07/2021 20:22

Yes to be fair I wouldn’t do my hall myself because of the height, I’ll get someone in, but the kitchen is straightforward so I’ll do the high wear walls myself.

About every 5 years. Really needs it every time!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 04/07/2021 20:26

our kitchen is open plan and there's hardly any wall space - tiled splashbacks between worktops & cupboards and the walls above don't need repainting at all.
it was all done 4 years ago (house extension).

the hall is also white and getting a bit worn out but we need to have a few rooms repainted next year so we'll get it done then.

Anordinarymum · 04/07/2021 20:27

I walk into the kitchen and think this needs a coat of paint and then I start making tea............. I have been thinking like this for years :)

One of these days I tell ya

🤣🤣. I've just redone the kitchen after about 2ish years but that's only because I hated the colour. Used Dulux kitchen paint which was like treacle, I'd stick with trade vinyl matt in future.

We use the same emulsion in all rooms (other than bathrooms and kitchen) and about once a year I paint over the dirty / scuffed bits of wall or bits where I've cleaned hard and thinned the paint.

I haven't had a chance to do this recently because of lockdowns so dd1 (who's self isolating) is currently running around the house with postit sticking one above every bit that needs painting. She'll be earning 10p for every postit note she sticks and then I'll be painting all these little spots. The bit by the front door / stairs is particularly bad but when it's done it'll be lovely and freshened.

RuthW · 06/07/2021 12:12

Same as every room - every 8-10 yrs

Doyouforseeproblems · 06/07/2021 12:21

About every third year but it'll all be competitive 'how long do I leave it' now given the first few remarks.

Decorating your house is one of the few, relatively cheap way, to make it look fantastic. Just lifts everything.

OhRene · 06/07/2021 12:58

You repaint?

Pfft! Next you'll be telling me you take down curtains to wash them like my MIL does...

Confusedandshaken · 07/07/2021 12:09

We've lived here 14 years. We repainted after 8 years and it doesn't need doing again yet.

I remember when I was young my parents would redecorate every couple of years. I don't know if they were just odd or whether paint was worse then or perhaps it was a combination of coal fires and people smoking in the house.

13luckyblackcats · 07/07/2021 14:01

My parents repaint their cream, immaculate house every three years (decorator does it). I seem to repaint my off-white hall and kitchen every six months as my household wreck everything. Maybe if I had a professional do it it would last longer?

Redsquirrel5 · 07/07/2021 15:49

We had the hall and stairs done last year. It was at least twenty years since it was done. It had been papered but we stripped it all, had it replastered while the builder was here and painted by a decorator. We won’t be leaving it so long in future it was just that I refused to do it so we had a stand off for about ten years! It was ripped at the front door but he still didn’t bother.
The kitchen gets done about 5-8 years. Bathroom the same. I did the front door, new back door, bathroom, shed door, Summerhouse windows and doors and the big shed. He did the kitchen and second coat on the shed.
