Deep cleaning washing machine with harpic power tabs?

Anyone done this?

My washing is not coming out fresh and the machine smells

I stick a cup of these in the drum occasionally and stick it on a hot wash. It recently smelt a bit after DH stuck some really dirty workwear through the machine, it still smelt after I put a washing machine cleaner in it so I did the soda crystals and that cleaned it.

I do clean the dispenser drawer weekly and find that if I leave it ajar the machine stays fresh a lot longer too.

I use the Dettol washing machine cleaner. Out it in your drawer, run a 60 wash and done. Wipe down the door, inside and out with antibac.

The last time I had my machine repaired I was told by the engineer the best thing to do for a machine is neat bleach, pour some in the drum and some in the drawer and run it at the hottest wash possible. Follow with a rinse just to make sure all the bleach is gone.

I do this once a month roughly and my machine never has any problems. My middle child has severe skin conditions and greasy emollients so I need to get the build up off my machine so I don't ruin it. He told me never to use dishwasher tablets or anything like that and the cleaners are basically just diluted bleach anyway.
