How do you deal with shoes/coats/stuff

We have a porch, with a cupboard. It gets very messy, but at least I can shut the door. None of us are tidy, put things away in the right place types, and I think I have to stop pretending we will be. We don't live in chaos, nor is our house immaculate at all times.

Dh wants to do away with the 18 inch deep, 3 feet wide cupboard in the porch to encourage tidiness. I think he's mad. We can't agree, so I am putting up with the doors that really need replacing because it's better than removing them altogether. It is only me that tidies the porch space-getting rid of shoes that aren't used and chucking current shoes in. I also sort out coats to make sure there aren't ones that no one is wearing taking up space.

Does anyone have a good solution to shoes and coats, 5 people's worth, that doesn't involve lots of clutter but also not a cupboard?

We have a shoe shelf. It’s a shelf with cubby holes, one for each pair of shoes. This is right where we come in from outside as we do not wear outside shoes indoors.

Then we have a row of hooks in utility room for current season coats, and a closet for not this season coats.

This is more or less what we have, only behind a cupboard door! Wish dh would understand that 5 people's worth of shoes takes a bit of organisation!

It is encouraging tidiness to have a "cupboard". We don't have a cupboard because DH says it will block light and tbh our hall is always a dumping ground.

I think the only solution to 5 people is to strictly limit what people can put there. We're only two people two we each get half the space.

At the moment we’re trying having no more than two coats /jackets each. Anything else has to go in the wardrobes.
We only have seasonal accessories - so the Woollies have all been packed away.
I’m still struggling with shoes- we have a basket but my entire family seem convinced that the shoes should live near it, but never actually inside.
I’ve only tried this for a month but it is lovely. But the weather is nice. In winter we’ll be back to over stuffed chaos I’m sure.

We have a couple of Fortnum and Mason hamper baskets and we just throw all our shoes in. We have a cupboard in the hall with hooks for coats, hats, scarves.

I can't function if there is stuff left around, so I'm pretty annoying to live with, constantly tidying.

Hooray! Breakthrough! We are going to get a monks bench or another type of seat with big storage box, and a long coat rail above. I get my "shove the shoes somewhere when guest come", dh gets rid of the cupboard and we both get the bonus of there being somewhere to sit to put shoes on.
