Name tags for school clothes - surname only?

DS1 is starting in reception in January. I have a DS2 (and another DC on the way) so clothes get reused a lot here. Should I get name tags just with our surname on so I don't have to replace them for future kids? Surname is long and unique so no chance of confusion with other families.

Thanks!

Provided that your child can recognise their surname (some children can only recognise their first name when they start recpetion), then that is the more sensible answer. If they can't then you can get tapes with a picture on as well to aid them.

Yes good idea imo.

Atleast it will get your dc's used to seeing their last name.

Teachers are their to help out in reception if they do have trouble ime.

Yes

I tend to scribble it on teh label with a biro, but yes, surname only would be fine

I bought ones with her full name and regret it now as I have another dd who will be wearing some of her coats and clothes etc.

Just go with the surname.

When I was at boarding school, one family had three DD's. Their nametapes all had 3 initials (one for each girl), then the surname. The mum adjusted the nametape to the correct girls initial as clothes were passed along. Prob. not neccessary in day schools, but our washing was done together, so they needed to know what clothes belonged to who!

If it is unique then yup.

We always had my sister's initial at the start, mine at the end, and then the irrelevant one was folded under and sewn.

I hated it - mine have seperate ones, but with a boy and girl I will only need to rename the school jumpers/p.e. t-shirts.

BibiThree · 20/11/2007 11:22

Oh yes! We do. Our surname is the only one in her class so far and we've got two mroe girls so makes sense!

Although, the state dd comes home in, her uniform won't be any good for hand me downs!

snorkle · 20/11/2007 12:06

As my mother had ordered far too many nametabs for my older brothers she never got me any and just used theirs with their names folded under. Nothing to do with wearing hand downs, they were way too much older for that, just being practical and cutting down on waste. I survived fine, but just occasionally had small bouts of envy at friends long nametabs in elegant script.

Flame · 20/11/2007 12:26

I just wanted my initial at the beginning of my name - people at school teased me

Furball · 20/11/2007 12:29

you could put ds1 name then surname then ds2 name then you could fold back which ever child you where sewing on. so on ds2 it would be surname then name and on dc3 you could just have the surname anyway if you had any left over

perpetualworrier · 20/11/2007 12:39

I can't see a problem as far as school are concerned, but I have swapped name tags as clothes are handed down, to help me when sorting laundry. Their uniforms are the same and they're not that different in size, so having their names in the collar just makes sure they get back to the right rooms.
