Dishwasher making things scummy

Pegs11 · 31/05/2021 12:14

Hi, my dishwasher has been leaving my plates, tumblers etc with some sort of salty scum on them (see photo). I have cleaned the machine with one of those dishwasher cleaning liquid things, but it hasn’t made any difference. Can anyone help? Thank you

Are you putting salt in?

dementedpixie · 31/05/2021 13:09

Have you cleaned out the filters and the spinny arms? Do you use salt and rinse aid? What detergent do you use?

justasking111 · 31/05/2021 13:10

rinse aid fixes this for me. I do clean out all the filter things and check the spinny arms, sweetcorn gets stuck lol

Pegs11 · 01/06/2021 19:27

Thanks all, I just normally use finish tablets, should I be adding anything else?

Will try cleaning the spinny bits as well 😊

Have you actually cleaned it. You’re supposed to properly clean it every couple of weeks. This means taking it all apart, cleaning out the arm, the plate, the filter etc. Once you’ve done that, then you run the cleaner through on a cleaning cycle.

Then ensure you use salt and rinse aid.

Salt and Rinse Aid

Some tablets claim to contain both but you only get a good finish by adding it.

dementedpixie · 01/06/2021 19:39

I Still use salt and rinse aid alongside all in one tablets

pantjog · 07/06/2021 23:07

I buy the old-fashioned tablets without salt and rinse aid and then add the salt and rinse aid separately. You might also need to adjust the salt dosage that comes out to suit the hardness of the water (this will be mentioned in the manual if you still have it).

I’ve had a dishwasher for 4 years and never knew you were supposed to add salt and rinse aid!! I’ve just been using Finish tablets! 😂

I had this and did all the things mentioned above and nothing worked. I changed to Fairy Platinum and have never had a problem since. Expensive but worth it.

Mumdiva99 · 08/06/2021 10:27

The salt goes in the bottom (there should be a big cap you screw off and tip it in)- buy a big bag of dishwasher salt as they take a lot.

I never use rinse aid. My glasses go like that when the salt needs refilling.

ElizabethTudor · 08/06/2021 10:29

Salt and rinse aid - look in your instruction manual for where to put them.

Pegs11 · 08/06/2021 10:31

What’s an instruction manual 😂

When you have found your manual and salt and... Grin, put all your glasses and only glass in the dishwasher, add two tablespoons of citric acid instead of a tablet (no tablet at all) and give it a normal wash. You probably need to do this several times with or without glass as it looks pretty bad.

HelpMeh · 08/06/2021 10:56

If you haven't cleaned your filter any time recently you really should. Good luck 🤢

Topseyt · 08/06/2021 11:08

You probably need to rinse out the filters. I do ours weekly under hot running water. It is amazing how much grime accumulates on them. I also use dishwasher cleaner at the end of every month.

Rinse aid is also needed. As is dishwasher salt unless you either live in a very soft water area or have a water softener.

The marks on your glasses probably aren't dirt. They are I think called etching. It is down to the action of the slightly abrasive detergent on the glass in very hot water. Rinse aid is designed to greatly reduce or eliminate this.

This. I've used fairy platinum tabs from day one and never had an issue, my mum gave me some finish tablets and it left gritty chalky stuff on everything. Fairy are the best in my opinion.

Bagelsandbrie · 09/06/2021 08:20

Definitely use salt and rinse aid as well as the tablets. We live in a hard water area and without that as well nothing comes out clean. Personally I find Fairy platinum much better than Finish.

Oldraver · 09/06/2021 08:29

Vinegar is good for cleaning dishwashers. I tried soda crystals once and it pitted the inside

Pegs11 · 09/06/2021 09:13

@oldraver how do you clean it with vinegar?

Love the username by the way 😜

Citric acid is as vinegar just stronger.
