Has anyone successfully dyed white polyester black?

I have an item of clothing that I want to dye black as the item is sold out in my size but got a white one. Can I successfully dye it black? It is 95% polyester and 5% elastane?

I have googled and found one brand of dye that says it will work but won’t dye cotton... so that is a bit of a worry as it has white stitching along and up the straps....

The stitching is probably polyester too.

It would be extremely unlikely for a polyester garment to be sewn with cotton thread. Even cotton garments are usually sewn with polyester thread.

Oh really! I didn’t know that, it looks like cotton thread. Any ideas how successful dying it black would be?

I used to work in textiles and personally I wouldn't attempt it.

Polyester is a synthetic fibre, the dye wouldn't cling to polyester or be absorbed the same way would it with cotton. I'm not saying it can't be done but it wouldn't be easy to do successfully

You can give it a go but it's unlikely to be a big success. Only do it if you don't mind wasting the white top. I've dyed stuff before and the thread has stayed the original colour.

I predict it’ll come out a dingy grey at best. That’s what happened when I used Dylon to change white polycotton (65/35) to black. It was probably just the cotton part that took the dye.

I’ve checked out the reviews of the stuff that says it dyes polyester on Amazon and they’re really variable. Never used it myself.

Ah pants. Maybe it isn’t worth the risk ... it isn’t expensive though..
