Did Redmonkey find stair gate for Victorian newel post?

There was a thread a couple of months ago about finding a stair gate to fit a rounded newel post and I wanted to know the outcome.

I have a similar problem - a rounded, rather decorative newel post in an Edwardian house.

Can't screw anything in to it and neither would I want to as it's a lovely dark wood and I think we would struggle to repair it if we had to drill holes in it.

So is Redmonkey out there or does anyone else have any ideas?

we drilled holes in a plank and used cable ties to attach it to the newel post - ours is cast iron - with a pressure gate. top of stairs is another plank screwed to wall with a hinged gate attached, closed by rubber tree tie round newel post.

Thanks fishie, I keep thinking thats what we may have to do. What pressure gate did you choose? Would you recommend it?

I've had a 10 yr gap between children. Can't remember how long you have to have planks of wood and cable ties round your newel posts!

I have attached 3 sections of my BabyDan BabyDen thing, in a Z shape, to the radiator and the bannisters at the foot of my stairs. I used toy ties () but cable ties are probably more secure!

I wouldn't do this at the top of stairs but at the bottom it is perfectly safe.

Do you then have to step over it SoupDragon, or can you open it?

Well, I do generally step over it but the middle section that's parallel to the stairs is the gate bit from the Den

Bumping to see if anyone else has any ideas.
