Smelly rugs

I've had some Persian rugs in storage for several years, and it turns out the storage room was damp and dusty. Havng finally bought a house big enough to swing two cats, I've put them down in the sitting room and dining room, where they look amazing. But oh dear, the wheezing! I've done everything I can think of to get rid of the smell and the dust - which really exacerbates my asthma, but which doesn't affect anyone else. They don't even notice! I've been over and over, both sides with the hoover, let them out in the sun of days on end, hung them over the fence and beaten the shit out of them, sprayed them with a mild white vinegar solution...better, but still there and still irritating. It can't be dust any longer, it has to be some sort of mildew/mould. Please, please, any ideas? I love them and can't afford to replace them. Many thanks for your wise thoughts.

Professional rug cleaning company - they came and took mine away, cleaned them and bought them back. They’ll also treat them with stain protector if you want. Just google for local companies.

Thank you so much for the response, Krapom. Trouble is, we live remotely, and it would mean having to get them to the city myself, and they're too big to handle on my own.. Anyone else with an idea of a home remedy, please?
