Hoover the carpets - mostly daily downstairs as I have 2 kids a dog and 3 cats. Upstairs once a week.

Mop the floor once a week in the kitchen and utility. Neither get dirty.

Clean toilets - every other day or so with a wipe and bleach / spray.

Clean dishwasher - dont have one

Clean washing machine - I wipe the draw out when it looks a bit grimy and clear the filter thing at the same time

Cut grass - I have artificial (game changer) but when I didnt it was once a week from about end of March until October

Change bedsheets - ours once a week. DCs once a fortnight. Be different when they're teens

Dust - couple of times a week, but not everywhere. Upstairs gets done less.

Clean bathroom/toilet - deep clean once a week

Clean oven - not often enough...

Clean fridge when I put shopping in. So around once every 10 days

Any others I am missing - windows, once a month.

BigPyjamas · 18/04/2021 19:46

Huge caveat: we have both a housekeeper and a cleaner who do most of this stuff, it's rarely me.

Hoover the carpets - once a week unless specifically mucky, kids rooms twice a week

Mop the floor- kitchen floor 3 or 4 times a week. Rest once a week

Clean toilets- proper scrub once a week. Daily quick refreshes

Clean dishwasher - never

Clean washing machine - never

Cut grass- when it needs doing. Weekly in summer.

Change bedsheets- weekly

Dust- weekly

Clean bathroom/toilet - weekly for adult, twice weekly for kids

Clean oven - never, Aga cleans itself

Clean fridge - once every few months maybe, but housekeeper does it.

Any others I am missing - windows, polishing silver, skirting boards, scrub grouting, polish wood furniture, scrub doorstep

Magnificentmug12 · 18/04/2021 19:48

I could not do what some of you do, I don’t have time anymore, but only because I choose to spend my time differently now.

Tidy everyday- clean 2 times a week. Beds once a week. Fridge, oven, other stuff I do when it’s bad and passed excuses 😂

Iammum1990 · 18/04/2021 19:52

@Ihatesandwiches thank you, I will look up that method.
@StillUpholding that is true, when I don't keep the house tidy it is a huge stress when anyone comes over. Good advice there:) thank you.
When do people find the time to do all this cleaning? Does anyone have toddlers and still clean multiple times a week? I have a 5 month old and 2 year old and genuinely don't feel like I would have enough hours in the day

Hoover the carpets
Downstairs gets the robot vac on daily, I go over with the big vacuum every other day.
Mop the floor
Downstairs twice a week, bathrooms upstairs once a week. This is only since I got a decent steam mop, before then I was less enthusiastic!
Clean toilets
Big clean once a week and a daily wipe around
Clean dishwasher
Every 8 weeks
Clean washing machine
Every 8 weeks
Cut grass
As and when it needs doing.
Change bedsheets
Weekly mine, fortnightly DC, teens do their own.
Dust
Weekly but I'll quickly go round with the vacuum too when that's out.
Clean bathroom/toilet
I do a different bit every day
Clean oven
When it needs it
Clean fridge
Weekly before my big shop.

I follow TOMM pretty religiously or I'd spend far too long cleaning!

clary · 18/04/2021 19:56

Hoover the carpets - daily downstairs, twice weekly upstairs
Mop the floor - 3-4 times weekly
Clean toilets - twice a week for whole bathroom, daily as needed for loos
Clean dishwasher NA
Clean washing machine ? not ever tbh
Cut grass - weekly or twice weekly in summer
Change bedsheets - weekly
Dust - weekly (up and down but not the same day; try to alternate damp dust with dusting using hoover tools)
Clean bathroom/toilet - twice a week
Clean oven - Not often enough!!
Clean fridge - surface wipe of outside - weekly; take everything out and clean all shelves - about every other month

Clean toaster and bread bin - weekly
Ironing - 3-4 times a week
Washing pots - daily

LaceyBetty · 18/04/2021 19:57

Hoovering and wipe the kitchen surfaces everyday.

Mop the kitchen floor once a week

Fridge when it looks dirty

Ditto oven

Sheets every two weeks

Dust rarely (don't seem to accumulate much).

Bathrooms once a week (give or take if they are grubby).

Washing machine never have Blush.

LaceyBetty · 18/04/2021 19:58

Oh, and purposely don't have grass because I would hate having to cut it.

LaceyBetty · 18/04/2021 20:01

I did the same in our old place, pre-DC, but I then always had to do a big panic clean if someone was coming over.

@StillUpholding

I was the same when I was younger and used to have people over all the time. It was so stressful having to clean up a couple weeks worth of grubbiness before having people over. It actually is much nicer keeping on top of it. Although my younger self would have laughed in my face.

clary · 18/04/2021 20:03

OP just seen your update. I don't have small DC any more. Tho when I did, I still followed a routine. I have set days to do all this. Honestly hoovering my fairly big house downstairs takes seven minutes.

Those who clean the washing machine regularly - what are you cleaning? Do you mean run an empty boil wash to stop it smelling? Or do you mean wiping down the outside? Or something else?

FelicityPike · 18/04/2021 20:10

@clary I run an empty boil wash with Dettol washing machine cleaner. Then I scrub the powder drawer and underneath it. I also clean the bottom filter & pipe.

MrsG30 · 18/04/2021 20:12

Ok I’m going to answer right away, then go back and read everyone else’s (and be utterly shamed for my lax cleaning!!)

Hoover the carpets - daily downstairs, weekly upstairs
Mop the floor - every other day
Clean toilets - every other day
Clean dishwasher - don’t have one
Clean washing machine - every 6 weeks
Cut grass - never. DH does this, and probably as little as he can get away with (we both detest gardening of any description)
Change bedsheets - 2 weeks, sometimes longer Blush (although DC bed is every few days)
Dust - every other day
Clean bathroom/toilet - twice a week
Clean oven - only if I absolutely have to
Clean fridge - every few weeks (unless it’s noticeably dirty)

Others I can think of:

Windows - every few weeks
Microwave - once a week
DC toys - I wipe over these every few weeks

I do a quick 10 min wipe around downstairs every morning after washing the dishes, followed by a hoover then a mop every other day.

gingerandproud4always · 18/04/2021 20:14

hoover the carpets -twice a week
Mop the floor- once a week
Clean toilets -2/3 a week
Clean dishwasher - once a month
Clean washing machine - 3/4 times a year
Cut grass - every 3 weeks
Change bedsheets - 10/14 days
Dust - once a week
Clean bathroom - once a week
Clean oven. Every 2 months
Clean fridge once a month

StillUpholding · 18/04/2021 20:20

LaceyBetty younger me would definitely be unimpressed that I’m discussing housework online on a Sunday night Grin

Iammum1990 I only have one DC, nearly 4. I did do a similar amount when she was a toddler, but only when DH was round at weekends/after work to keep her entertained, or I’d do a little bit during nap time. Now she can entertain herself quite well
I do a little bit on my week day off too (I work 4 days). I definitely didn’t do as much when she was a baby even though I wasn’t working. I think with two such little ones you’re definitely ok to keep your standards on the lower side!

HalzTangz · 18/04/2021 20:23

@Viviennemary

When people say clean dishwasher do they mean run a dishwasher cleaner through. Of actually clean it out by hand.
I do both, wipe around by hand (it's surprising how yucky it gets) then run a cycle with a dishwasher cleaner
MrsG30 · 18/04/2021 20:26

@LaceyBetty I’ve just finished reading through and am very pleasantly surprised!!!

@Iammum1990 you asked if anyone does this with kids - I have a 4 week old, 3 year old and 2 cats - but I also have a DH who does his share which makes a hell of a difference. Clothes washing for instance, I almost never ever do, DH has taken over that as I’m happy to just go out and buy new underwear when I’ve failed to wash any 😬

I do little and often - I’ll do the bathroom when DS is in the bath (this is wiping it over btw, not a full deep clean, I rarely deep clean). I’ll do the conservatory windows when DS is playing in garden etc. This is all dependent on whether the baby is being 99p shop sellotape, or is having a full “duct tape” day 🙄🙈 (and he hates the sling still, the joy)

RiverMeadow · 18/04/2021 20:27

Hoover the carpets - everyday
Mop the floor - every 3 days
Clean toilets - twice a week
Clean dishwasher - don't have one
Clean washing machine - I buy washing machine cleaner and maybe do it once every 6 weeks?
Cut grass - don't have any
Change bedsheets - every week
Dust - every 2 days
Clean bathroom/toilet - every week
Clean oven - I wipe it over every few days, it then saves doing a huge oven clean.
Clean fridge - I sort the fridge every week, wipe it over if it needs it.

Bluntness100 · 18/04/2021 20:27

Honestly. I think it all needs to be done weekly as a min. I think more than that and it does get a bit manky, I don’t do it daily as I think that’s excessive but I don’t have young kids or pets. But even when I did I wasn’t doing it daily.

You can break it down

Change Beds on a Monday
Dust, clean mirrors etc on a Tuesday
Hoover on a wed
Clean bathroom and loos on a Thursday
Mop on a Friday

Clean kitchen work surfaces hob etc daily after using.

Keep on top of laundry and critically put it away when it’s dry.

Our house is always tidy but we put things away after we use them, nothing gets left laying around other than iPads etc, dishes are stacked in the dishwasher, dry laundry is put away immediately, there’s no piles of crap, and before bed, or first thing in the morning I open the blinds and plump the sofa cushions etc,

Things like cleaning the oven, fridge etc are periodic. The grass needs doing only when it’s growing, so spring, summer and early autumn and is either weekly or every two weeks.

When things get left for too long it becomes a much bigger job to deal sith it. Keeping on top of it. Little and often, tidying as you go, makes it a lot easier. And most people prefer living in a tidy clean environment.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/04/2021 20:38

Wipe down kitchen and vacuum downstairs - most days
Bathrooms and vacuum whole house - once a week
Change sheets - fortnightly (ours one week DCs' the next week)
Everything else - as and when

Iammum1990 · 18/04/2021 20:41

@Bluntness100 that is some really good advice, thank you. I think that is definitely doable if I do small bits at a time. And you are right, I feel 100 times better when I am in a clean room

OP posts:
dementedma · 18/04/2021 20:47

Oh God, a MN cleaning thread. Fascinating and shaming in equal measure. The only thing that gets done daily in our house is dishes and wiping kitchen worktops. Everything else is as and when.cant remember last time I dusted. Fridge cleaned about 3 times a year, oven same.
Next will be the folks doing 3 lots of laundry a day and only using towels once...

Bouledeneige · 18/04/2021 20:51

I'm amazed at some of the routines some of you have. Do you do all that and hold down a full time job and does your partner share this work equally?

Aquamarine1029 · 18/04/2021 21:07

Yes, but also it's really not that much to do, especially when you're used to it and get it done quickly and efficiently.
