How to soften cellular baby blankets

Has any one have any tips for softening cotton cellular blankets?
They were last used 3 years ago.
I have washed them in Ecover non bio liquid detergent and tumble dried them but they are still quite stiff/hard

Wash with no washing liquid/powder to get any residual detergent out then do the rinse in some vinegar or do some extra rinses to mkae sure all the old detergent and fabric softener is out. If you have a tumble drier put a small ball (tennis or ball pit balls)in with them whilst drying to bash them soft!
