Hi all

I live in rented, previous tennant had 2 small dogs (might be relevant). The hall carpet stinks, i regularly use carpet washer as ds & ddog & i have all walked mud in through the winter. On each clean the carpet just smells worse, its really getting to me. Ive tried adding urine odor remover to carpet shampoo & zoflora. There is a really strong smell, can't place what it is poss amonia? Ive booked a professional clean for a couple of weeks time - they arent sure if it will help! wondered if there is anything else i can try? It's a deep pile carpet, I can't afford to replace it at the min but is looking likely for future.
Can anyone help?
Thank you!

Have you tried using bicarbonate of soda or vinegar?

Stealthynamechange · 03/04/2021 08:20

Not tried bicarb - will add to shopping list! Do you just sprinkle on carpet then hoover?

Hadn't thought about painting floorboards - not sure what is underneath the carpet tbh the kitchen is concrete (massive flood waiting new floor 🤦‍♀️) I'll have a look if i can get a bit of the floor up.

Try biological washing powder to break down the protein enzymes in what ever it is causing the smell assuming it from the dogs. It may well have soaked through to underlay so I would peel back the carpet to assess the extent of the issue and have a look at the backing. It may well not go until you change the carpet.

There are some newer pet odour remover products on the market you can try too. Carpet might not be to expensive to replace (understand this is totally relative) but if renting speak to landlord.

clarazabel · 03/04/2021 08:31

If the smell is urine and has seeped through to the flooring it could be that. Friend of mine moved into a place with a similar problem and had to scrub the floorboards for ages before the smell went.

Veterinari · 03/04/2021 08:36

Sprinkle bicarbonate on carpet, leave overnight, hoover next day

JemimaTiggywinkle · 03/04/2021 08:37

If you’re renting, can you ask the landlord to change the carpet?
Obviously don’t know about your tenancy agreement, but I would think that flooring would usually be the landlord’s responsibility?

JustJustWhy · 03/04/2021 08:49

I helped renovate a repossession and the urine had soaked through the carpet in a number of places, right through to the floorboards. @clarazabel is right. It will take ages scrubbing the floorboards to start to get the smell out. We ended up replacing the floorboards!

Thanks everyone

They are coming to replace kitchen floor next weekend so i'll ask them to pull up a bit of hall carpet to look, I've tried but irritatingly can't get even a corner up!

@clazabel @justjustwhy I have a horrible feeling you might be right.

@JemimaTiggywinkle i think the landlord will blame my ddog so im better just sorting it myself. Hes pretty useless, i've had loads of problems here but cant afford to move at the min.

If you sprinkle bicarb over it, use a dustpan and brush before you get the hoover out.

DogsSausages · 06/04/2021 19:23

Bicarbonate with a few drops of essential oil. It's a natural form of carpet powder.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned by any previous posters but I found Bio Productions Sta-Kill Deodoriser Concentrate for the Removal of Odours such as Vomit, Urine and Pets - 750 milliliter works amazingly! We were selling a car that had not been used in some time which developed a wet damp smell on the seats. It was amazing. I think I ended up using it on other things as well.

All the best
