Fridge innards

It's been possible to take the plastic edging/bumpers/trims off the glass fridge shelves to clean both in every fridge I've ever owned. I was cleaning the Scout Hut at the weekend, I opened the fridge and the smell neatly knocked me out - spilt milk I think. So I brought the shelves and racks and trays home to put in my dishwasher. When I took the plastic trims off there was a lot of resistance. I thought they were gunged up with muck but I now see they were stuck on with some sort of silicon or mastic. Have I trashed the fridge or is sticking the trims on some kind of scout dad production?
