What’s that smell?

Hi

We have been in our new house for a few weeks now.

There is a family room at the back of the house that has french doors leading onto a decked area. The glass in the windows need changing as the seals have gone (condensation inside)

Anyway a couple of days ago a smell appeared! It’s been getting more noticeable. Smells a bit like burning/rotten veg.
Have searched high and low incase the kids have left any fruit in their toy boxes etc but no idea where it is coming g from!

What could it be? The smell wasn’t there when we moved in

Dead rodents under the decking

mamakoukla · 20/03/2021 00:24

Now if you lived in north Americas, I’d suggest skunk.... it’s spring, our friendly neighbourhood skunk is back doing the rounds.....

Can everyone smell it? Of yes, Dead mice in the wall cavities?

If no,
Covid?

cooperbug · 20/03/2021 17:41

@YellowPurple yes we can all smell it so not covid!

If dead rodent when will the smell go away and what can we do to get rid of it sooner? I feel sick at the thought!

I had dead mice in hollow plastic table legs in my shed, years back. I don't recall the smell of burning or rotting veg. Putrid yes.

Check the curtain poles and anything else the vendors left in the room - look behind the radiator, etc in case someone left you an unwanted gift.

cooperbug · 20/03/2021 22:00

@IstandwithJackieWeaver like what?

Oh I bet it's dead mice.

I can smell them at my conservatory doors. I was blaming dog pee but it's definitely dead mice and lots of them. It will go away. The bones disintegrate eventually.

I work with someone who moved to a house with decking and they got rid of it owing to mice and rats and put a patio down - problem solved!

YellowPurple · 21/03/2021 02:18

2-3 weeks max for the smell of dead rodents to stop smelling

cooperbug · 21/03/2021 21:13

Oh no way! I hope it goes away soon!

We are actually planning on getting rid of the decking but not this year. Is that how they get in?

Mice can get thru a hole as big as a pin head

tiredmum2468 · 23/03/2021 20:52

@cooperbug

I believe the pest control people who came out to the "decked area" told her they were a "breeding ground" for nests for rats and mice
They got rid of it all in a day

It's put me off decking!!! Although it looks good it's what's underneath and I have little ones too rats carry a lot of germs
