Decluttering one item a day (and counting down til the opening of charity shops!) – thread number 17

stealthninjamum · 04/03/2021 17:18

This is an accountability and chat thread for mumsnetters who dream of living in an uncluttered haven of calm and tidiness.

Bit by bit we are slowly decluttering our houses and keeping our fingers crossed that charity shops will open on 12th April – although we’re also adding to the list of places in the second post that will also take our clutter.

The aim of this thread is to help us get rid of just one item a day or 365 a year. We just report back on our progress and then chat about anything and everything. The thread is for anyone so newbies are always welcome.

ellieq I found them in Iceland. I think they’re McCain branded ones. A bit like smiley face potatoes but unicorn head shaped 😂😂

Also been through my gym stuff and managed to get rid of a few tops and a couple of pies of gym leggings.

PurpleFrog · 11/04/2021 22:17

Ah - I wondered if unicorn potatoes were ones that had started sprouting! Grin

Nordicmom · 11/04/2021 23:36

Purplefrog , I thought that too 😁

411: for the grand sum of £5.72 I'm sending some books off to Ziffit, 8 so you can see the value lol

412: the stupid bookcase holding DHs stupid PC Games broke so that's gone, was in the garage anyway but it's out the way now and games are in a box. O suggested he actually decided if he wanted them all (he rarely games) but he got moody and defensive so we'll see

413: ton of cardboard, plastic rubbish from packaging out of garage. G still needs lots of work but I need to clear charity stuff first

414: booking made we Wecollectclothes for this week just so there's less to take to the shops next week

415: awful thorny bush in rear garden but now o have a tiny splinter o can't get out

ememem84 · 12/04/2021 09:47

used up a pen this morning. wahooo.

i say used up - it ran itself out because i didnt put its lid on when i chucked it into my pencil case. so it leaked. luckily the pen was blue as is the pencil case. and pencil case can probably be washed.

stealthninjamum · 12/04/2021 11:51

wow nordicmom I'm jealous of how productive you've been, please take a rest!

sleepingstandingup I have about £30 of books to get from the ziffit app. It's about 42 books so I'm really pleased. I'm at the stage where I wouldn't care if each book only got 5p I would just like to get rid of it. Having said that I discovered one book would get more from webuybooks so I'm in the process of scanning them in to both apps including the books that ziffit wouldn't give me anything for.

And I still don't have a box to put them in so need to go shopping to pick a couple up.

Meanwhile the lady who wanted the David Walliams books said she would be here today but hasn't given a time. I'm irrationally irritated, even though I am not planning to go anywhere it would be nice to know when to expect her. I had a shower really early in case she was going to be here in the morning.

I've just taken delivery of some flamingos for my garden. and some kitchen storage.

dh rolled his eyes at it. but we need the storage. some of my kilner jars are chipped and cracked so need to go. am replacing with solid plastic ones. much easier to keep in high cupboards as they will have less chance of breaking.

SleepingStandingUp · 12/04/2021 15:42

I want garden flamingos, you need to add a photo once they're grazing in your garden!!

Gassylady · 12/04/2021 17:03

Another one thinking unicorn potatoes were just extremely sprouted 🤣🤣 🦄
@Nordicmom please pace yourself - I’m worn out just reading about what you are achieving. Several items for the rag bag culled when sorting clean washing. More Lego sorted 🙄 gradually the boxes are getting married up with their contents and are being stashed in storage crates until they get listed

Vinorosso74 · 12/04/2021 17:16

Flamingos and unicorn potatoes! I feel like I'm missing out!
Stuff deposited at dump this morning. Is good to get stuff out the door.
More ins-some more stuff for post op for me and new clothes for DD although some clothes will be sent back.

ememem84 · 12/04/2021 19:11

Outs:

A holey moley flannel
Some odd socks from the dc
More clothes in the “outgrown” boxes
Three Easter eggs melted down and turned into rocky road. This also used up a bag of marshmallows.

I want more flamingoes. Just enough for a flock. I don’t think two is a flock. I’ll sneak some in when dh isn’t looking. He didn’t notice I’d moved a bookcase into dds room for 3 weeks...

I want!! But my babies would wrestle them to the ground and eat them 😱😭

Thanks, might see if DD likes them!

Today I put one book into the charity bag (a duplicate - it was a Xmas present, but I already had a copy). I have also sorted through a box full of fabric, and added some more pieces of fabric that had been put in various places around the house. Now all the fabric is in one place (even if that place is a box on top of a bookshelf). I would have liked to keep it all with the sewing box, but there isn’t the space.

The next step would be to decide which fabric to keep and which won’t be used, so I will return to it another time.

ememem84 · 13/04/2021 06:39

@SleepingStandingUp oh my babies will more than likely pull them out the ground too.

@EllieQ have a look. They’re yum. Made me feel like a kid again.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/04/2021 08:31

416: 2 boxes sent to Wecollectclothes, I only counted one upthread.

417: large toy my Mil Passed to me to pass to a friend who never did... So now it's gone to the charity place. It's only been in my garage 6 months.

Where did you get them from em? Your flock might be spreading to the Midlands 🤣🤣

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 13/04/2021 11:31

I havent been on mumsnet much so just had a quick read through! nordic you are being very productive, reading your list makes me feel tired!!
em I love the flamingos!
gassy we have so much lego that dds don't really use anymore. Im dreading the sort out required to sell it all eventually!

The last month I have been sorting out quite alot (brought on my seeing my friends house who is so organised and looks amazing! I have enlisted her help on a future trip to b&m and organising my house!)

So, ive done the garden and decluttered alot of ivy and weeds, sorted the shed (which needs replacing but waiting on landlord to sort out!), got rid of a bin liner of garden toys, 3 plastic houses, broken sunlounger, broken airer, lots of crappy tools. Sorted the remaining tools into a box which previously held toys. Trofast unit that was in the garden is hopefully being collected today.

Kitchen - got rid of 22 mugs, 10 glasses, a box full of old worn and useless style tupperware, some microwave egg poachers, omelette maker and more random cookware I don't use.

Girls room - dd1 sorted 2 bin liners of crap she had kept hold off. Dd2 got rid of a dolls campervan, big shopkins house, 2 playsets, a bag full of barbie dolls and the playmobil (barely played with just gathered dust!).

Sorted the airing cupboard, got rid of old towels, 2 bedding sets and a stack of blankets.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 13/04/2021 11:33

Also for dds room 2 bin liners of empty lol balls (I must find the recycling thing for them im sure there's one!) And a bag for life of empty lol pots.

And from the kitchen 6 boxes of out of date flavoured tea i didnt like (going to work for the mud kitchen) and 3 boxes in date so will put on olio.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 13/04/2021 11:34

Empty shopkins pots that should read! Might take this to work for the children as they love a tub!

Just amazon. Not hugely pricey. I think £30 in total. Maybe less.
footprintsintheslow · 13/04/2021 18:14

Day 213; yesterday
Literally just some photos.

Day 214: today
A load of garden plant pots recycled
2 aloe Vera plants on freecycle

ememem84 · 13/04/2021 19:08

Two Kilner jars gone. They were cracked.

In - 6 new barbrantia canisters for my stuff in the kitchen. Have ordered 6 more too. They’re square so fit much better in the cupboards. Meaning it looks like we have more space.

SleepingStandingUp · 13/04/2021 19:59

418: holey pair of cropped leggings
419: a chill bag I found last week accidentally decluttered along with two cans of pop and snacks somewhere on the way to the park... won't replace as we have many
420: ceramic oven bowl thingy accidentally dropped and now decluttered into the bin. Unlikely to replace if I can find suitable alt. for pasta bake night

ememem84 · 13/04/2021 20:20

Two pairs of ds’ pjs which have seen better days.
