Storage container for 1.5kg flour without decanting

The mice are back & I need some storage solutions. I can't be doing with decanting and want mouse proof containers to store whole 1.5kg bags of flour. You'd think that would be easy to find Confused Any recommendations? Thanks

Lock & Lock used to do a tall 2.6l size that was perfect for this, but I think it’s been discontinued. The 1.8l size fits pretty well though - it’s tight for an unopened bag but fine if you’ve used a bit already www.hartsofstur.com/lock-lock-1-8-litre-rectangular-storage-container-hpl813.html

I use these for flour, pasta and cereals. Really good size and fit in my cupboards nicely

You would think it would be easy to find - bizarrely, it's not.
My 12years plus ones are all cracked and at the end if their life and I can't find rectangular, flour bag shaped ones, ideally for one and a slightly used bag.

These are Sistema Bake it 2.4l which just takes a full decanted bag of museli.
The 3.2l size has same footprint but is just taller. A 1.5kg bag of flour fills it 2/3 decanted but should fit in OK if left in the bag.
They come with their own scoop and honestly the 10 seconds it will take you to decant the bag will be repaid by the 3 seconds you save every time you take flour out of it.

If you don't want to decant then can you find a box the right size to fit onto your cupboard shelf and put all your baking ingredients into one box instead of individual containers for each ingredient?

A Kitchencraft flour tin with flour written on the side is what I have

We have these, bought when we had a weevil infestation, and they are fab. I decant too, much easier than wrestling with the bag every time I need some flour.

Locknlock

That's the 1.8l tub. Some bags are a bit tall when unopened but there are bigger tubs that you can fit several in.

I started using them after a flour weevil infestation.

WellTidy · 10/02/2021 10:11

I have the same as Pick - the 1.8L tubs. I always decant, and then do a shake, so that there isn't as much as in the flour. And then top up. And repeats, until its all in the tub.

But the Sistema photographed above looks better, I think.

Its surprising how hard it is to find a tub that is suitable! I would have thought an advertising point would be something along the lines of 'this tub is suitable for 1.5kg flour/1kg sugar/450g corn flakes/24 weetabix' etc.

Converted part of our cellar into a pantry last year and I went with the Oxo Pop containers - so much more space, I love them! As per PP I decant but from www.oxo.com/blog/cleaning-and-organizing/guide-oxo-pop-containers/ looks like the 4.2L might work?

Slothkin · 10/02/2021 16:43

Oh apparently US flour bags are massive, sorry! 😆

Asitgoes · 11/02/2021 21:14

Some great suggestions here, thanks. Maybe I need to become a decanterSmile DD & I were on mouse watch earlier having heard suspicious noises from the pantryShock

I keep enormous bags of flour in the freezer & fill up an old biscuit jar when I need it. It freezes fine & can be used for bread after being out of the freezer for about half an hour. No weevils! No mouse food!

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 11/02/2021 21:28

I had a thread in exactly this, which resulted in lock & lock 1.8l tubs for 1.5 flour bags (a bit tight but the lid will always go on with a bit of a jiggle), and 1.3l for the 1k flour bags.

See here for other people’s helpful suggestions:

I'm a convert to decanting! I did originally think it was all a waste of time for Pinterest worthy photos, but it's tidier than half full boxes and bags, plus I rarely run out of stuff. Predecanting, my larder stores wavered between 3 full boxes of This and only 2 tablespoons of That. It's much easier to.see what I've actu2got and what I need to buy. Pound shops are brilliant for cheap food storage
Acovic · 11/02/2021 21:31

I use the lock 'n' lock ones.

ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 11/02/2021 21:38

I also use the Lock'n'lock ones, perfect for flour/s, sugar and other baking stuff.

Slothkin · 11/02/2021 23:50

I decant to give myself more storage space - it’s much easier to jenga lentils and rice if they’re all in handy tubs!

livingthegoodlife · 12/02/2021 12:02

This stores a whole bag of flour air tight. Nice and streamlined. I have loads from this range.

tywysoges · 12/02/2021 12:10

I also have the oxo ones, the 2.4l square one for flour - bought because of weevil infestation, so I decant with a sieve now.

tywysoges · 12/02/2021 12:14

PS: just noticed that the link above doesn’t seem to have a 2.4l one, just a 2.6l - I bought them from dunelm and their website say 2.4, so I’m confused 🤣

You don't need to sieve, just stick the bag of flour in the freezer for 24hrs when you buy and that kills any eggs!
