Gas oven takes for ever to cook!

So I've never used a gas oven until we moved house. I've got the instructions that came when it was installed and I'm doing as it says for which shelf to use. And following recipe directions for which gas mark to use. But everything seems to take forever to cook! It just doesn't seem to get very hot? Also if I try to put a full baking tray to roast vegetables for example it seems to really struggle to cook a full tray. It performs better with just a few measly pieces spread out e.g. 6 sausages and nothing else Hmm

I can't really cope not being able to cook full trays.. electric oven could handle 2 full shelves of food e.g. roast chicken with roast veg tray above it.

I've read a few old threads on gas vs electric and quite a few posters loved their gas ovens.. What is your secret?

Maybe it’s just a rubbish oven?

It isn’t a Beko is it? We had one that was the most useless gas oven ever. Even after heating it for ages you could put your hand on the bottom of the oven. Used to have to cook everything on number 8. Try turning yours up, you may just have to experiment.

Every other gas oven we’ve had has been excellent and cooked far better that the electric oven I now have to use because this house doesn’t have gas to the kitchen.

I've never had this issue with gas. Could you get an oven thermometer to see if it is at temperature?

Aquamarine1029 · 05/02/2021 19:13

Something isn't right. You need to get an oven thermometer to see what's going on.

Is the seal around the door still good?

DearTeddyRobinson · 05/02/2021 21:13

Echoing the posters above, get an oven thermometer. The door seal may need to be replaced or it could just be a crap oven, but just because it's gas shouldn't mean it takes longer to cook. If it's just not getting up to temperature then you may need to consider getting A Man out to look at it :-)

Is there a baking tray blocking anything? (Speaking from recent experience...)

Really? It's brand new Sad Indesit. Not the most expensive but not the cheapest either. I guess I'll have to complain to the online retailer I got it from?

Definitely buy an oven thermometer and test the heat settings. What the dial indicates and the actual internal temp of the oven can be massively different not just from brand to brand but from oven to oven and house to house. I have the opposite problem with my (gas) ovens. If the dial indicates the internal temp will be 180, it's actually more like 240. That lead to some disasters before I realised what was happening. Now I'm aware of the issue I can work around it. And the inferno like temps give a great crust on my lockdown sourdough!

Yes, as it isn't working!
