Radiator dust

Housing101 · 29/01/2021 22:53

Have recently moved in to a new house. The radiators are all very, very dusty.

Not used to cleaning this type of radiator, my previous house had all modern victorian style, easy to just wipe around.

How do I get in to this radiator to clean

Dust inside them? It’ll burn off if the heating is on. Round the bottom and sides you need a flat duster on a stick.

The top grill will come off with a bit of encouragement.

If it doesn't pull up/off directly, normally the sides can be pulled off, freeing up the top grill.

Bowl underneath, pour water through. Hoover the rest

Thank you

Yes I'm having trouble getting the top grill off. They look like they've never been cleaned before (the inner bit)

How can you see that they’re dusty? If it’s just the top bit I’d just hoover through the top bit and then ignore, unless you have asthma or a dust allergy.

Housing101 · 30/01/2021 20:12

Because looking down in to it you can see the dust. It's not hidden in any way

Yes, that's what do. I didn't realise they could be taken apart. It doesn't look like they can.

2 man job - one underneath the radiator with the hoover nozzle aiming underneath the bottom of the rad. One stood above radiator with a hairdryer on full blast pointing down.

I saw it on a TV show once and it works like a charm.

Cocoabutterkim · 30/01/2021 20:19

Exactly what @addicted2spaniels says. Blast from the top and sides with a hairdryer!

SatsumasOrClementines · 30/01/2021 20:19

Was going to suggest strong hairdryer too.

Housing101 · 30/01/2021 20:26

Fantastic idea!!

I don't think I've ever been that bored 😮

We have the same radiators. It's tricky to do the first time but you can usually get the top grill off with something like a screwdriver. Once you've done this you can just push a feather dust down through all the slats and then hoover. I usually damp wipe around the top inside after that and then clip the top back on.
