Cheaper: TESCO or Sainsbury?

Out of the two, which one is generally cheaper for groceries?

IME tesco online averages £70 for a shop, sainsbo's is more like £90

My weekly shop at Sainsbury's is about £20 more expensive than Tesco.

Asda is cheaper again and I've just discovered Aldi, which is fab for all the basics and vastly cheaper than any of them.

One month, when I was particularly bored, I did the same shop each week at a differnt supermarket. Exactly the same shopping list at Tesco, Sainsbury and Waitrose (own brand products where poss). There was much less difference than I expected. Tesco came out a tinsy tiny bit cheaper than Sainsbury(less than £2 diff). Waitrose was most expensive but by less than £6.

IME you end up spending more at Waitrose because there are more tempting things you end up adding to your basket. If you stick the basics there is no big difference.

Tesco except that we trust Sainsburys own brands more so end up being happier to buy those, and therefore spending less, if that makes sense?

Tescos deinitely, for some reason I don't like our Sainsburys it seems really badly organised and don't get me started on Morrisons.

I try to do online shopping as much as possible using codes from here and find that I spend a lot less if I am doing it online as its really easy to look at all the special offers.

But interesting.. I'm always surprised at how cheap Waitrose own brands are. Problem is they have fewer own brands than the others, so I've always ended up paying more there. Plus I get all aspirational and end up buying vintage smoked prune pate with truffles .

I think Tesco is marginally the cheapest of S and T. But, if I'\ve got a choice betw big Tesco and big Asda, I'd go for Asda if you buy organic stuff bcs its soooo much cheaper here, and I think just as good quality as Tesco's or Sainsburys.

If you only have access to small Asda, or aren't interested in organic stuff, avoid like the plague, they're really depressing and smelly. I think.

Rather pay a little bit (under £5) more at Sainsbury's and have a pathetic hit of retail therapy. Sad I know, but hey, pleasure is pleasure.

the website www.mysupermarket.co.uk lets you price up an online shop at all four supermarkets and send your order to the cheapest. Most enlightening

my last shop came out cheapest first Asda-Tesco-Sainsbury- Waitrose (the last by a big margin) so not really a surprise.

I too was under the impression Tesco was cheaper, but have made no scientific experiment!

I have always found Tesco to be far more expensive than Sainsbury's.
Maybe it depends what sort of groceries you buy.

I have recently moved to Harrogate only to find it is the only large town in Britain not to have a Tesco!! I am really struggling with my choice between Morrisons, ASDA and Sainsburys. ASDA is closest but you have to pay to park in their car park which puts me right off and in Morrisons you have to pay for a trolley and I HATE Sainsburys cause I can never find what I need! I miss Tesco!

Don't know, but there was something on the radio the other day from thr guy who runs the mysupermarket website.

He said Tesco prices have gone up 16% in the last year

Hmm, that would kind of expslain my sudden more-broke-than-usual feeling.
Hooray, now I can really enjoy Sainsbury's without guilt! Or have they gone up too?

Didn't say, only mentioned Asda and Tesco. Asda had gone up 13%.

He did say something about Waitrose, but the sodding traffic news came on at that point so never eally heard it, although the general gist was it had stayed the same ( I think)

Sometimes I think I am the only person in the world, who finds Tesco more expensive than others

when i moved a few yaers ago i was gutted to have to shop and pay more at the local sainsburys...

however i now find that if i shop at tesco,certain own brand equivalents (eg smoked makerel and medium cheddar) are of a much lower quality...making the 'saving'less appealing

Interesting about tesco's prices going up - I get more or less the same stuff each week and I've gone from spending £80 to over £100 - while sainsbury's shop has remained stable at about £85 (though i do get more own brand stuff from there)So Sainsbury's is getting my vote at the moment.

Yup, can vouch for Tesco prices going up. Just done my weekly shopping, and whole meal rolls up from 59 to 63, own brand coffee up from 80 to 99. The whole bill came out £10 more than usual. (without wine....)

My Tesco's shop usually ends up at least £10 cheaper online than Sainsbury's and I have found they send far fewer substitutions. Still like Sainsbury's though and tend to switch between the two every couple of months or so.

But Tesco is also quite skilled in delivering items with Use By date the next day... grr. However, they refund when you call them, but nevertheless: Grrrr

Sainsburys does that too - they just point it out to you at your door so you can send the sell by items back, then go out to your local store... shop there as well as having a delivery. Double grr.

I shop at Tesco and Sainsbury and I can categorically tell you that both have raised their prices quite a lot recently. My bills have skyrocketed for no real reason. Also, I am not a geek but I do remember the prices of some items and have seen them rise in both shops. Dh reckons it is to do with the poor summer we had. I don't know.

I spend far more at Sainsburys but that is because it is a much bigger shop and I am tempted by so much more there. When I shop at Tesco, I usually just buy the bare minimum for a week.

i've only shopped a few times at a big tesco extra. have to say i was very disappointed at the quality of their 'fresh' stuff. therefore even if sainsbo's is not cheaper, it has more value for money to me.
