Have I destroyed my oven ?!??

Hi there!

Desperately seeking some guidance at the moment on what to do regarding my oven.

I often use the oven in my flat and tend to clean it quite regularly with Ovenpride spray cleaner. However, I loaded a freshly clean oven with lots of (greasy) Christmas food on Christmas Day and it seems to have ruined the bottom of the oven. It almost looks like the metal at the bottom had bubbled and warped and it’s flaking a lot. When I cooked the Christmas dinner there was smoke coming from the oven but I assumed it was fine and that maybe a bit of food had fallen.

I’ve now used oven pride again and also tried cleaning with baking soda overnight. I’ve seen a slight improvement but no change to the really bad patch. I want to know if it’s just baked on grease (reversible) or if I’ve caused actual damage to the oven.

I’m currently subletting but moving out next month. Do I tell the person I’m subletting off that I may have damaged the oven or do I wait, keep cleaning and see if they notice?

Any advice is welcome, thanks! X

I can’t imagine cooking greasy food could ruin an oven. Are you able to post a picture?

Sounds like burnt on grease. You could try bi carb mixed to a paste with a little water or lemon juice leave it overnight then wipe away in morning. Try Ovenpride after that. Good luck.

Bio detergent had worked well for me in the past, sounds like burnt on crud.

the metal of the oven can't bubble & warp. it must be burnt on food. keep going with the cleaning

Rub a wet dishwasher tablet all over it and see if that helps

Thanks all for the helpful responses. Here are some photos of that makes it any clearer. Will continue with the cleaning! X

Get an aluminium scouring pad and give it some elbow grease. Worked on my oven when nothing else would shift the burnt on bits!

Would it help to have some steam in there?

You could try an Ovenproof Bowl with water in a medium oven for an hour or so to soften the caked on stuff before you go in with harsher cleaners.

That happened to me. I made a paste of bicarbonate and white vinegar and left it on overnight - just wiped it all off in the morning.
