Wool carpets

I stupidly bought a pale coloured wool carpet for my twins bedroom before they were born. The lady in the shop even told me it was a terrible idea! They are now 5y and the carpet is grim, especially one main patch where calpol was split in the night and not cleaned properly.
I have tried spot cleaning with various things, but the whole thing really needs a clean. Has anyone used a rug doctor or similar carpet cleaner on wool carpet? Will it ruin it even more? Thanks for any tips!

We have pale wool carpets. We've always cleaned up properly, but there are still stains. I suspect we need them to be professionally cleaned.

I've found Rug Doctor type machines can only be good - even if the stains remain. My real problem is bastardy little fuckers that eat the wool (yes, moths, I'm looking at you. All of you.), but I've found them very hard wearing and, best of all, they're not plastic.

I managed to spill wood balm (dark brown) on our cream wool carpet. It took 3 attempts,But Dr Beckman's rug/ carpet cleaner has almost removed it. I can still see a very faint mark, but if you didn't know to look, you'd never see it.
