How often do you wipe down/clean your fabric sofa.

Recently upgraded to a new sofa - fabric! Only had leather before which I regularly wiped down with two messy kids and a dog.

I have had new sofa for 2 weeks and regularly vacuum it and spray with febreeze.

But how often should you wipe it down? Obviously if something was spilt on it I’d wipe it off. But we aren’t eating or drinking on it etc.

It’s looking clean and new still but I’m worried wiping it too much (like I did my old sofa) will make it fade or wear it out quicker?

I got a steam cleaner and it is amazing. Highly recommend. Do that every couple of months plus more regular hoovering/brush with specific rubber brush (dog hair). No kids though.

I vacuum occasionally, when I’m feeling enthusiastic. I definitely would not have got round to hoovering a two week old sofa. I’ve never wiped them down, I’m not sure I really know what you mean. Spills are spot cleaned. I don’t use febreeze; if something is smelly it should be cleaned or got rid of not sprayed with cocktails of chemicals to stop people noticing. I am definitely on the filthy slob end of the MN cleaning spectrum though, no bleach, sheets washed fortnightly etc.

I hoover them once a month, wash removable covers every two months, once a year fully clean it with Dr Beckmann carpet/upholstery cleaner.

They are covered with blankets/throws as I have two dogs and they get washed once a week.

I remove and wash the covers every 3-4 months. I am not supposed to but I found out that if I wash them with a quick cycle at 30 degrees they come out like new. They are water/fire repellent (sort of, or at least before I washed them!) and that means I don't even have to dry them as they don't absorb much water at all.

Mine is 17 years old and I've never wiped it down. I spot clean stains, vacuum it a couple of times a year and wash the cushion pads of they're really grubby or if there's a large spillage/stain.

What are you wiping it with?

lazylinguist · 04/01/2021 15:56

I hoovered mine when I had a fabric sofa. I didn't wipe them - I'm not sure that would be a good idea tbh - cleaning products would risk damaging the fabric. I have a leather sofa now, so wiping is fine!

I hoover under the cushions when I remember, but I've never washed or wiped it. Probably had it about 2 years. I don't have any pets though. Are you like this with other areas in your house??

minipie · 04/01/2021 16:51

Ummm never?! I’ll sponge any spills and any removable covers get machine washed approx once a year. Will hoover under cushions occasionally. Otherwise nowt.

mammmamia · 04/01/2021 16:54

Hoover it maybe once a year and sponge spills Blush
No pets though. My sister lived with us with her cat for a few months and at that point I did definitely hoover it more often, maybe once a week - really don’t like pet hair.

movingonup20 · 04/01/2021 17:40

As required eg when there's a spill. I think the cleaner would vacuum monthly or so but haven't had her since covid hit and I haven't vacuumed it, don't think dp has either

Mintjulia · 04/01/2021 17:48

Mine have removable covers so they go to the dry cleaners about every three years. In between, I hoover them weekly.

Sofas are 19 years old and still unmarked.

NoPinkPlease · 04/01/2021 17:50

I vacuum under cushions every few weeks to get the crumbs and wash the covers if something gets spilled on it. I spot clean any small marks. Main advice is keep people eating food off them unless they aren't clumsy!

Bouledeneige · 05/01/2021 09:27

I vacuum every 2 weeks - the sofa is velvet and attracts fluff and crumbs. Never washed it. But I will probably dry clean to prevent fabric damage.
