The sink stinks

Or not so much the sink as the cupboard underneath.

It started on Sunday morning with a bit of stale smell and by yesterday afternoon it was absolutely rancid.

I've pulled everything out of the cupboard and cleaned it. I've unscrewed and emptied the u bends, I've put half a ton of bleach and zoflora down the drain. I've pulled off the back of the cupboard to check for mould, wet, damp, dead rats, unexplained rotting food. No sign of anything to explain the smell. Kitchen has only been in 18 months.

What could it be??? It's making me nauseous.

Get a plumber to clear the congealed fat out of your sink trap.

I have this problem sometimes. I did the bleach and zoraflora thing with a couple of kettles of hot water to dissolve some mouldy food I think I had got stuck. Worked for now.

If the drain is linked to your dishwasher, have you put salt in the dishwasher to prevent the build up and smell

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/11/2020 18:25

It could be the drains outside. Usually the sink is the first place that it vents.

@BluebellsGreenbells 😬 I haven't put any extra in, but I always fill it up when it tells me too. I was going to do a dishwasher cleaner wash tomorrow too.

@MrsMoastyToasty DP and I discussed the outside drain but it doesn't smell out there. Will get some drain buster tomorrow too.

😩😩

UPDATE

It's not the sink/drains/dishwasher it's a dead rat under the kitchen floorboards 😩😩😩😩😥

Oh no! I was going to say a dead mouse!

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 20/11/2020 14:21

How did you identify that? Well done!

passthemustard · 20/11/2020 20:30

@BarryWhiteIsMyBrother
After spending a ton of money cleaning the drains and the dishwasher (cleanest drains in the country!) the smell was worse. So we managed to get a floor board up behind the sink and found rat droppings. Called the pest control who confirmed stench is dead rat stench. 🤢🤢

Congratulations - you must be so relieved it's over. In the countryside we have little mice coming in when it starts to get cold so we have to put poison down. I don't like it much but it's better than having mice indoors!
