Having to rub clothes to activate softner?!

My washing doesn't smell nice anymore!

It seems we have to rub the clothes to activate the softner?!

Has anyone experienced this?

Am I doing something wrong?

What brand? Do you always buy the same scent? I think you get too used to it after a while so you smell it better if you swap the scents around. I usually have 2 or 3 on the go.
