Black spot on ceiling

helpmeouttahere · 17/10/2020 23:51

We seemed to have developed black dots / spots on our painted bathroom ceiling. Window is slightly open till bedtime, and we have an extractor fan. 1st time it's happened , any tips on how to get rid off them, or how to prevent any more ?
Thank you

Have you checked for any damp coming from above - water ingress in your roof?

Sounds like mould. Use mould cleaner and increase ventilation, don't dry clothes on rads etc. Could be problem with gutter outside either.

Thought you were going to say below the bathroom as we had this on our kitchen ceiling which is underneath the bathroom... that said, aren't their special anti-mould paints for bathrooms?

Mould. Check source, fix and paint with antimould pain. In the meantime, make a bleach and water solution and spray thoroughly (not soak but try not to miss a spot). This can sort/arrest it for quite a while if a proper fix is a way off. I would use 1:2 water to bleach dilution or slightly higher bleach proportion. Some use vinegar solution. Do not rinse

Check the insulation in the loft space above, if there’s bits missing you’ll get cold spots which mean some condensation can form and then mould, mildew spots on the ceiling.

I'll just point out op that we get the same problem occasionally and we have an old extractor fan which we've not used, preferring to open the window and swirl a towel around to disperse the steam. An electrician was replacing the extractor this week and found that it was discharging into the roof space as there was no ducting to the outdoors beyond the unit! Luckily we hadn't used it due to its age otherwise all the damp air would have gone into our loft!

Thank you for all ur replies.. there is an attic above but never thot it would be connected.
Can having long showers with window closed have tht effect ?

Yes, we have showers with the window closed but open afterwards and swing a towel around to disperse the stream. Hopefully we won't have to do use the towel when the extractor works properly. If we do nothing after a shower the black spots start up.
