How do I get masking tape residue off glass windows?!

Anniemabel · 16/09/2020 11:44

I masking taped the windows to paint the frames and then got busy and didn’t get round to taking the masking tape off. South facing window - I’ve just taken it off and it looks like the heat of the sun has semi melted the stickiness of the the masking tape onto the glass and I can’t get it off! Any tips most most welcome!

wd40 maybe. I normally use de-solv-it pre wash spray as it removes sticky stuff but depends if you have anything similar. Nail polish remover?

OMGisthisforreal · 16/09/2020 12:15

Look up ‘goo gone’ on Amazon - it’s a thick spray which dissolves the sticky stuff
I bought some in USA after overhearing library staff discussing its merits
It lasts years and is so useful for removing labels from glass and crockery etc
There’s probably several manufacturers which make a similar product and an Amazon search should list them in its search results

Surgical spirit

Knittedfairies · 16/09/2020 12:15

I second trying WD40.

dementedpixie · 16/09/2020 12:17

There's a product called sticky stuff remover (same manufacturer as the pre wash spray I mentioned above) that could work too

Seeline · 16/09/2020 12:18

WD40 or lighter fuel

Elbow Grease, it works miracles on pretty much anything, not expensive and can get in any supermarket

@Anniemabel hi OP this happened to us last year it was all over the windows - bloody nightmare. I'd heard about the suggestions above re wd40 it works ish but doesn't in my experience get it all off. I also tried GooGone - useless. In the end I used The Pink Stuff paste - very cheap - use plenty of it wipe it over the residue and leave it for a few minutes then wipe it off with a clean microfibre giving it a bit of a scrub action as you wipe off - works brilliantly. I've even been able to get rust stains off the upvc with it (house renovation). Good luck!

WD40 for defo. I left masking tape on my windows (for various reasons) in the height of summer about 4 years ago. It was a nightmare, I tried all sorts of things, Mayo, oil and other weird concoctions found on the internet but the only thing that worked immediately is WD40. It is also fantastic for getting chewing gum off fabric.

@mommybear1

Is The Pink StuffPaste ok to use on the rubber & PVC surrounds

I was rather liberal with the masking tape 😫

Anything that has acetone in it like cheap nail varnish remover

MashedSweetSpud · 16/09/2020 14:18

T&G tar and glue remover.

embolass · 16/09/2020 14:19

Second elbow grease, 99p yellow spray in Asda, B&M etc. Great for everything from shower screens to greasy marks on clothes. Love it!

BibiThree · 16/09/2020 14:26

Furniture polish - spray on, leave for 10
Mind, should dissolve the glue and make it easier to remove.

Anniemabel · 16/09/2020 14:36

Thanks all, loads of ideas for me to try!

@MJMG2015 hi yes I used it on the whole window the only thing I found with it on the black seal is it's a wee bit harder to get off I dampened the cloth and wiped it over I found the seals needed doing twice to get the pink stuff off entirely - sadly I also used a toothbrush Blushto get into the crevices all came up lovely.

badg3r · 16/09/2020 14:40

Hand sanitiser!!
