Curtain hanging- how to measure for best look

I have to hang new curtains and am going a bit potty with measuring up. We need to start from scratch with fitting poles and then hanging the curtains throughout the house. The windows are in a recess which is large about 3 m by 2m . The recesses are about 10cm from the floor.
My questions are:
How high above the recess should we fix the poles? ( the ceilings are not v high, it’s a 1960s house, I’d say there’s about 20 cm above the top of the window recess).
Should the curtains hit the bottom of the recess, or go down towards the floor beyond the recess ( which is about 10cm above the floor).
Thanks for any advice.

We have same sort of ceiling height (50s house) and I went for pole half way between top of window recess and ceiling. Also make sure you give yourself enough pole either side for the curtain to pull back and not obstruct window (unless you want it to)

At the bottom it sounds like the window goes down the right near the floor? 10cm above? In that case I would take curtains to floor, with a little extra to make them touch and pool very slightly. This looks better IMO.

Hi @1990 and thanks for the advice. I hadn’t thought of letting them pool slightly on the floor. Will give that some consideration!

There are various diagrams online if you Google to help with measuring as well
