Strange smell in house

For the last few days we've been able to smell a slightly varnish type smell on the our downstairs wall. Does anyone know what it could be?

We've found out what it was! Turns out a can of lacquer being kept in a cupboard in our garage (which is below us) had exploded due to the heat we had a few weeks ago.
