Washing machine stinks of rotten eggs

Hi all,

I'm really hoping someone can help me as I can't afford to buy a new washing machine right now but it absolutely stinks of rotten eggs when I put a wash on. I've cleaned the inside with bleach and ran a hot wash with bleach in the compartment to clean and it's still snelling.

Any advice?

Have you checked the filter? We get all sorts of crap in there.

Yep, filter has been checked and cleaned xx

Do you use tabs or powder? I generally use tabs but every so often put a powder wash in as it stops the smell

Have you taken the drawer out and cleaned underneath it and in the space around.

I would do a hot wash with soda crystals/white vinegar. And make sure you have thoroughly cleaned the drawer, filter, rubber seal etc. Also switch to powder if you don't use it already.

Is your washer next to / connected to the sink? I had this problem recently but the smell was coming up the plug holes as soon as the washer went on - absolutely foul smell of rotten eggs. I tried putting crystals, etc down the sink and washer on a self clean cycle with cleaning powders. Didn’t work. My dad eventually came round and unscrewed all the plastic pipework under the sink - it was full of disgusting sludge! Scrubbed it all out in the garden with hot bleachy water. It worked Grin

1/4 cup of Dishwasher powder or handful of tablets, run on the hottest wash. Your machine outlet pipe will have stinking sludge.
