I need help - rats

I feel absolutely disgusting saying this but we have a rat problem in our (council) house. Around a week and half ago I saw a mouse in the middle of the night. The council sent out pest control who put poison and traps down. The night before pest control were due to come back out I found a dead rat down the side of my fridge. Pest control put more poison down and said if I heard or smelt anything to call them and they'd come out. This morning I could smell a horrible smell on the bathroom (which is downstairs behind our kitchen) I made my partner smash away at our bath panel and sure enough under there was a dead rat. Called pest control straight away to remove it and put down more poison. They told me it was classed as urgent and they'd be out today. Long story short, they didn't turn up and won't be coming until at least Monday.

I have a 11 month old who I'm scared to bath etc. I'm pregnant and absolutely petrified. I'm crying every evening, scared to use the bathroom. Every little noise I hear I'm thinking it must be a rat. I'm scrubbing everything, making sure not to leave anything to encourage rats (not that Ive got a messy house anyway but I'm paranoid now)

Please guys tell me that someone has had this problem and had it resolved. I'm getting really really down about this and I don't even want to be in my own home

Sorry for the long post

Not had that problem for ?30? Years . Yes it was horrid., but we all were fine. You done the right thing trying to get it sorted quickly.

The rats probably will avoid areas that have had dead rats in.

I've lived in many houses and all of them have in some way or other had rats. There is some statistic about you're never more than a certain number of meters away from a rat. I like to think I'm a not a messy person.

Ocassionally, like now, they invade and it makes you feel grubby and like everything isn't clean. Its just one of those things. You've done everything right, the poison is down. They'll keep putting it down (if you chase them) every few weeks for a few times until it stops being eaten.

Next thing to look at, in the cold light of day, is if there are obvious places they're getting in. The people doing the baiting may be able to give some advice.

Many of my houses have been rural and mice have been a bigger problem getting into the pantry. They can get through much smaller holes. I keep all my dried foods in jars/ tins and clip seal boxes.

Are your cupboards all sealed at the back or open? If they're open you may wish to think about which ones you keep food in and how its stored.
