Wet carpet cleaner recommendations? Worth buying or hiring?

Do you use yours often or just hire when needed? Any brand recommendations?

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for product recommendations, we’ve recently updated our guide to the best carpet cleaners with lots of options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and editors. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I've hired a rug doctor before, I think for a thing you only use infrequently it's fine to hire.

We've had a vax, with pets it's an absolute necessity in my opinion. Can't compare it to a professional one as I've never used one.

Used both. Have a vax & dogs. It’s fine for a run over the rug in their area, but it’s not as good as a rug doctor machine. I used that when we moved house. That said I am not sure that wet cleaning wool carpets doesn’t ultimately make the problem worse- removes any finish and dirt just penetrates further.
Vanish powder or bicarb does a good job with a decent vacuum.

I hired a RugDoctor when I moved into a flat with particularly grotty carpets and it made an amazing difference. I tend to hire them once a year or so just give things a deep clean and that seems to keep on top of it.

Also, if you do hire one don't use the RugDoctor shampoo they try and sell you, it costs a fortune and if you're doing a whole house you'll get through bottles of it. You can buy a product to use in wet carpet cleaners in the supermarket for a couple of quid and its just as good.

I have Smartwash. Use it not so often, once in a week or even rarely, most of the time it's hidden because needs a lot of space. It's good in cleaning carpets and I am glad about buying it.

We have a Henry type vax.

Perfect for when the cat peed on the bed, husband/kids/BIL throws drinks over the sofa/floor, cat vomits, kids walk shit in etc etc etc.

@Wildwood6- thanks for the tip about getting the supermarket carpet shampoo instead of the rugdoctor ones.

We will be renting out of current home, but only need to use it for 2 bedrooms. Then moving to a much larger house. We will eventually buy new carpets there, but using the grotty ones there to start with, hence thought just buying might be best.

We dont have kids or pets, so may not need to buy though. thanks everyone- off to check prices.

I use the rug doc every 2 years or so even though I have a carpet cleaner.

It’s money well spent.
