Hard wood floors and dirty feet!

MrsZ57 · 25/06/2020 16:54

This is the most infuriating problem... our feet get filthy from walking around all day on our hard wood floors.

I hoover once a day with a hard wood attachment and mop once a week. I've even tried getting down on hands and knees and scrubbing with a microfibre cloth! And it seems like there is always bits of dirt on it. And when I look at my feet, they are always black (same if I'm wearing white socks, actually)

Is this normal? I feel like when i go to other houses with similar flooring, my feet don't get half as dirty!

My wood floors are fine but I mop them every day as well as hoover.

BillywigSting · 25/06/2020 16:56

You need to mop more than once a week. Three times a week is more like it.

A spray mop with removable, machine washable pads is your friend.

BillywigSting · 25/06/2020 16:59

@5612345ct I aim for every day but as evidenced above this rarely happens!

Though it's more like twice a day now with dc in and out of muddy gardens and paddling pool all day Hmm

Gazelda · 25/06/2020 17:15

Yep, a steam mop every day. It leaves very little excess moisture, dries up quickly. Pad goes in the washing machine. Only takes about 5-10mins to do our open plan kitchen.

MrsZ57 · 25/06/2020 17:39

But like... the whole house? Every day? I do the kitchen and bathroom every day, but the whole house every day seems a little excessive...

I have the same issue and I do not think it is dirty floors, more the stain of the wood coming off to cause blackened feet.
No matter how well I scrub and clean, or how often, I find dark stain comes off.
I have experimented and keep cleaning the same small patch and it never wipes clean.

GrumpyHoonMain · 25/06/2020 18:16

Where is the dirt coming from? Someone must be tracking it in. I would ban shoes indoors and create a kind of boot rack outside the back door so the kids don’t track garden dirt in. If you have dogs maybe restrict them to specific areas of the house.

Feelingpoorlysick · 25/06/2020 18:16

You need to be mopping every day.

BillywigSting · 25/06/2020 18:17

Yes whole house every day, and strict no shoes indoors rule

MrsZ57 · 25/06/2020 20:12

It’s not dirt, it’s more dust and “bits”. TBH it’s lint, it’s mountains of lint all over the place. But you can’t see it, I just find it on my feet at the end of the day.

I don’t know, I’ve now found other threads with women laughing at how little they get round to mopping their floors. How do you all have time to mop the entire house every single day?!

I think the fact it’s laminate wood flooring and we live next to a main road isn’t helping. DH is convinced it isn’t lint at all but pollutant (which in many ways is worse). I might just have to shoehorn in the extra mopping somewhere!!

Do you vacuum the floors /skirting everyday? Do you dust doors /walls etc?

BlueTreeBlue · 27/06/2020 09:24

Remember if you had carpets, all this dirt would still exist but you would be treading it in the carpet fibres! So be happy that you can clean it.

bestbefore · 27/06/2020 09:40

You need a hand held vac like a dyson to vac everyday - that will get the bits up and then you can just wet mop when you need to

mommybear1 · 27/06/2020 10:47

I agree with pp more mopping I'm afraid. You could look at a robot bab and mop if you can afford it.

mommybear1 · 27/06/2020 10:48

*bab = vac Blush

MrsZ57 · 27/06/2020 14:30

I guess it’s one of those things where if I didn’t care then I could just leave it, and if I do care then I have to suck it up and clean it. Given that I work full time I think I have to make peace with it... Straw poll of my friends suggests they do not mop more than about once a month 😂😂

I just hate looking at my feet and seeing all the lint!!!

@MrsZ57 How do you all have time to mop the entire house every single day?

Like I said, spray mop! Takes literally ten minutes to do the whole house. It takes longer to hoover than to mop. I couldn't be doing with a mop and bucket, I'd probably never mop if I had to haul one of those around every time

Tiredmum100 · 27/06/2020 16:14

Life is way too short to be mopping daily. Buy some slippers, problem solved!

Unknown2020 · 28/06/2020 07:26

I think you just need to mop it more than once a week.

I mop all my floors every single day. Literally takes 5-10 minutes. I steam mop them and they are dry within minutes!

DeborahAlisonphillipa · 29/06/2020 23:43

Between us we use the (cordless) Dyson about 3/4 times a day as have young kids. We mop much less frequently, Maybe once a fortnight. Ideally we’d mop more but there’s so much we need to do (look after kids, play, read etc, cook, clean, work) and things we want to do (Exercise, Spend time on our personal interests, have a bath, read, maybe even have sex 🙃 etc). It’s all very well saying it’s only 5/10 mins a day but we all have so many things that take 5/10 mins and it all adds up and I for one am too shattered for an extra 10/15 mins. I do agree to taking shoes off at door and wearing slippers to minimise it. and share hoovering and mopping with others in your family, it’s not your sole responsibility.
