Keeping wooden floors clean

So I've just moved into a house with engineered wood flooring. It's beautiful and I feel very lucky but looking at the children's white socks and they are practically black on the under side! My cleaner mopped before we moved in on Saturday. Obviously sometimes mopping isn't the best method so I got my Shark steamer out and gave it a good going over (using steam cleaner friendly detergent). Is this the best method? Am I going to be forever cleaning the floor now? And do I need to buy the children black socks?? Wink
